Chapter 3 - The Seventy-Two Hours
Laura had not disappeared after a marital fight.
She had entered a private medical program.
Three days.
That was the plan.
Eleven months earlier, Laura began experiencing severe confusion, insomnia and episodes of memory loss.
She had recently stopped breastfeeding.
Her doctor suspected hormonal complications and medication interaction.
Corinne persuaded Laura to undergo confidential neurological evaluation at Hale Recovery Center.
Why confidential?
Laura feared Ethan would panic and cancel an important business acquisition to stay home.
She wanted answers first.
Corinne drove her.
Laura left Maisie sleeping in Ethan’s arms.
She kissed both of them.
Then disappeared.
At Hale, testing found high levels of a sedative Laura had not been prescribed.
The physician believed she had been taking it secretly.
Laura denied.
Then her bag was searched.
A bottle carrying her name contained the drug.
Corinne said:
“That changed everything.”
Ethan looked through records.
Prescription:
Laura Carter.
Prescriber:
Dr. Samuel Pike.
Laura had never seen him.
The signature was electronic.
Corinne believed Laura was hiding dependency.
She agreed with doctors that Laura should remain for stabilization.
Why not tell Ethan?
Because Laura begged Corinne not to.
For first seventy-two hours.
After that?
Laura became disoriented.
Then signed temporary extension.
Was she competent?
That was disputed.
Ethan found form.
Laura’s signature looked shaky.
Seven days became thirty.
Then Laura requested discharge.
According to notes, she became aggressive.
Threatened to “take Maisie and disappear.”
Corinne became afraid.
“She said she’d run with the baby.”
Ethan stared.
“You believed that?”
“She barely knew what day it was.”
“Did she threaten Maisie?”
“No.”
“Did she threaten me?”
“No.”
“She wanted her daughter.”
Corinne lowered her head.
Then Laura’s condition suddenly worsened.
Memory gaps.
Tremor.
Speech difficulty.
A second toxicology panel again showed sedative.
But she was inside controlled facility.
How was drug entering her system?
That was first moment Corinne realized something was wrong.
She demanded new testing.
The next panel showed:
Zero.
Previous samples had been mislabeled.
Maybe.
Or manipulated.
Corinne arranged transfer to another clinic.
That was seven months ago.
The photograph.
At second clinic, Laura improved.
She recognized Corinne.
Remembered Maisie.
But did not remember Ethan clearly.
Why?
Neurological injury from prolonged medication exposure? Maybe.
Independent neurologist found no permanent damage.
Symptoms were consistent with intermittent sedative exposure and severe stress.
Laura’s memory gradually returned.
Then one day she asked:
“Where is Ethan?”
Corinne told her:
“He thinks you left.”
Laura slapped her.
According to Corinne:
“That was when I knew I’d gone too far.”
Ethan stared coldly.
“And still you didn’t call.”
Corinne’s voice broke.
“Because by then I discovered why someone wanted Laura inside Hale.”
“What?”
She pointed to folder.
A financial authorization.
Signed during Laura’s stay.
Laura Carter had supposedly relinquished control of an eighteen-percent voting interest in Carter Family Holdings.
The beneficiary during incapacity:
Ethan.
But Ethan had never seen it.
