Chapter 13 - The Page Corinne Hid
Corinne surrendered page after attorney advised her.
She had removed it seven months earlier.
Why?
It said:
If Laura ever enters Hale care, assume our family safeguards have failed.
Ethan stared.
William had written Laura’s name before death.
Why would he anticipate Laura entering Hale?
Because Laura had once volunteered with Harbor legal clinic.
She had met Nathan Hale.
William knew Nathan was recruiting Carter Foundation donors to reopen old Harbor property as private recovery center.
William opposed.
He warned board.
Laura supported him.
Corinne did not know that history.
After William died, Nathan returned.
When Laura later became ill from pharmacy error, Corinne selected Hale without realizing William’s warning applied.
But why hide page once found?
Because it made her culpable through negligence.
“It proved Dad told us not to use Hale.”
“Us?”
“He told me. I forgot.”
“You forgot?”

Then after Laura disappeared she finally read.

Corinne nodded.

Then on night Ethan returned, Maisie pointed again.
Corinne panicked.
She had already been spiraling.
She grabbed toddler, dragged her from cabinet area and said:
“Your mother left you. Your dad will too.”
Why that cruelty?
Because Maisie’s insistence on cabinet threatened Corinne’s entire constructed reality.
Corinne wanted child to stop expecting Laura.
It was emotional abuse born of control.
No mystery justification excused it.
Then Ethan opened cabinet.
His horror came from seeing Laura alive on monitor.
But there was one element not yet explained.
Why did live screen show Laura sleeping in a room she had already left?
Police determined feed was not live after all?

So Laura was not in that room when Ethan opened cabinet.

Laura.

To force Ethan to believe she might still be under someone’s control long enough to investigate before rushing out.
That seems manipulative. Laura admits mistake.

Better monitor was live from Cedar Hill until two days before; then system cached loop after Laura left, timestamp generated locally. So no deliberate deception. Good.
