Chapter 6 - The Medicine in the Kitchen
Laura’s sedative exposure began before Hale.
That meant someone had drugged her—or her medication had been altered—inside home.
Police reconstructed.
Laura took prescription migraine medication occasionally.
Bottle stored in kitchen cabinet.
Six weeks before disappearance, pharmacy dispensed normal tablets.
Lab later tested remaining pills.
Some had been replaced with visually similar sedative tablets.
Who had access?
Ethan.
Laura.
Corinne.
Housekeeper Maria.
Nanny Grace.
Martin Shaw during frequent estate meetings.
And several guests.
No immediate answer.
Corinne became prime suspect.
Motive?
Gain voting power.
But financial records complicated theory.
Corinne did not profit from Hale property sale.
She actually voted against second Hale transaction.
Martin voted for.
Ethan abstained because he believed Laura had abandoned family and did not want to exercise her proxy.
Corinne had used her proxy once—to freeze further sales.
That suggested she was not simply chasing money.
Still, she concealed Laura.
Why?
Because four months ago, when Laura wanted return, someone sent Corinne video.
Maisie sleeping in nursery.
Taken from inside room.
Message:
BRING LAURA HOME AND NEXT DOSE GOES TO MAISIE.
Ethan’s face emptied.
“You had this?”
“Yes.”
“And didn’t call police?”
“I did.”
“Which police?”
“Martin’s private security team.”
Not police.
Another terrible choice.
Corinne feared internal access.
She moved Laura again.
Where?
A protected apartment arranged by former nurse.
Laura agreed initially after seeing threat.
Then after two weeks she vanished from that location.
No one knew where.
Corinne searched privately.
Laura started sending coded messages.
The monitor was latest.
So Corinne’s fear of cabinet came from belief it contained clue capable of exposing Laura’s location—and whoever threatened Maisie.
But why torment Maisie physically?
There was no justification.
Corinne admitted resentment.
Months of fear, control, guilt.
She began seeing child as source of crisis.
One afternoon Maisie repeatedly pointed at cabinet.
Corinne panicked.
She lost control.
Cruelty was hers.
Not strategy.
Not protection.
Ethan said:
“You don’t get to make that sound complicated.”
Corinne cried.
“I know.”
Then investigators found hidden nursery camera used in threat video.
Device was gone.
But mounting adhesive remained behind decorative molding.
Installer invoice linked to Carter Security.
Authorized by:
Ethan Carter.
He stared.
“I never ordered it.”
Electronic signature came from his tablet.
Tablet stayed at mansion.
Who knew passcode?
Laura.
Corinne.
And Ethan’s father’s former executive assistant:
Samuel Reed.
Samuel had managed household logistics after father’s death.
He retired eight months ago.
Police located him.
Samuel denied.
Then phone records placed him near Hale Recovery the night Laura was admitted.
Why?
“Martin asked me to deliver documents.”
Which documents?
Emergency proxy forms.
Samuel had carried papers connecting medical stay and financial transfer before Laura was supposedly declared incapacitated.
He knew plan in advance.
Then he said:
“I thought Laura agreed.”
“Who told you?”
“Martin.”
The investigation turned toward Martin.
But Laura’s next message warned:
“Martin is hiding something.”
