Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Entered at 2:13 A.M.
Security footage answered part of it.
Six nights earlier, at 2:13 a.m., someone entered mansion through side service door.
A woman.
Blonde hair under dark hood.
She knew alarm code.
She walked straight into living room.
Opened cabinet with key.
Placed monitor inside.
Added Laura’s phone and envelope.
Then paused.
She looked directly toward hidden security camera.
Laura.
Alive.
Ethan replayed it repeatedly.
“Why didn’t she come upstairs?”
Corinne said:
“I don’t know.”
Maisie had been sleeping one floor above.
Ethan away on overnight business trip.
Corinne asleep in guest wing.
Laura could have walked into nursery.
She didn’t.
Instead she left after eleven minutes.
Why?
Video showed her writing note beneath monitor:
DO NOT LET ETHAN FIND HER.
But Ethan examined handwriting.
“That isn’t Laura’s.”
Forensic comparison agreed.
Laura placed monitor.
Someone later wrote warning.
Who accessed cabinet afterward?
Corinne.
Twice.
But she denied writing it.
Security footage showed second entrant next morning.
Martin Shaw.
He had key.
Corinne had given it to him months earlier for estate documents stored inside cabinet.
Martin admitted writing warning.
“Why?”
“Because feed is bait.”
“Bait for what?”
“For Ethan.”
Martin claimed Laura contacted him six days earlier.
She said she had evidence of forged medical documents and wanted Ethan to find monitor.
Martin feared trap.
He wrote warning while investigating.
Why not tell Ethan?
Again:
“I needed proof.”
Ethan’s patience vanished.
“Apparently everyone in this family needs proof except me.”
Then Martin produced email from Laura.
If Ethan sees the monitor, he’ll come looking before I know who’s safe.
Do not let him follow signal.
Was it authentic?
Metadata said sent from Laura’s old account.
Could be compromised.
Then Maisie changed investigation.
The toddler repeatedly walked toward cabinet.
Touched lower right panel.
Said:
“Mama.”
Ethan assumed she remembered photograph.
But nanny said Maisie had been doing that for weeks.
Before monitor was placed.
“What was in cabinet before?”
Corinne hesitated.
“A music box.”
Laura’s.
Maisie knew melody.
They opened it.
Inside was microSD card.
Recorded months earlier.
Laura spoke directly:
“If Maisie remembers this song, Ethan will eventually find the card.”
She looked healthy.
Alert.
Fully herself.
“Ethan, I remember everything now.”
He gripped edge of table.
“I was ready to come home four months ago.”
Then Laura said:
“Corinne stopped me.”
Ethan turned.
Corinne closed eyes.
Laura continued:
“She had a reason.”
Pause.
“It wasn’t a good enough one.”
Then:
“But the person I’m afraid of isn’t Corinne.”
Corinne began crying.
Laura leaned closer to camera.

“And that person had access to our house.”
