Corinne admitted installing hidden rear compartment.
But not for Laura.
For Ethan’s late father, William Carter.
Before death, William gave Corinne sealed packet.
Instruction:
Keep this inside family cabinet. Do not open unless Laura Ellis-Carter asks about Project Harbor.
Laura had asked.
Two weeks before pharmacy error.
Why?
While reviewing family foundation grants, she saw recurring payments:
Harbor Children’s Initiative.
$900,000 annually.
Legitimate charity.
But one recipient address matched Hale Recovery Center property before it became clinic.
Laura wondered why family charity paid building later sold to Hale.
Corinne panicked because father ordered secrecy.
She hid packet deeper.
Did that cause Laura’s medical crisis?
No.
Timing appeared suspicious but pharmacy error independently documented.
Still, Laura’s investigation brought her into conflict with Corinne before disappearance.
What was Project Harbor?
William had funded temporary housing for mothers leaving coercive relationships.
Hale building was once transitional residence.
No sinister experiment.
No child trafficking.
Then why secrecy?
Because one protected resident was:
Corinne’s mother.
Ethan and Corinne shared father but not mother.
Ethan knew Corinne’s mother died young.
He had been told her name:
Rebecca Lane.
Project Harbor file showed:
Rebecca Hale.
Nathan Hale’s aunt.
That meant Corinne was related to Hale family.
Corinne stared.
“I didn’t know.”
Was that true?
Birth certificate confirmed Rebecca Lane was legal surname after marriage.
Born Rebecca Hale.
Nathan was cousin.
This explained why Nathan seemed unusually willing to work with Corinne.
Did he know?
Yes.
He found genealogy during Laura admission.
He used family connection to gain Corinne’s trust.
He told her Hale could “protect Laura quietly.”
Corinne accepted partly because he claimed their mothers were close.
So Nathan exploited kinship.
But Corinne had not conspired from beginning.
Then sealed packet contained William’s letter.
Corinne,
Rebecca asked me never to let Hale family control your medical decisions.
If any Hale offers to “protect” someone you love, get independent counsel first.
Corinne collapsed into chair.
She had done exact opposite.
Why had William distrusted Hales?
Rebecca’s father—Nathan’s grandfather—had run private residential program with poor oversight.
Not criminal conspiracy.
But repeated coercive guardianship complaints.
Rebecca escaped family control through Project Harbor.
William helped.
So Laura’s story unintentionally repeated Rebecca’s.
A woman labeled unstable.
Relatives deciding she needed protection.
Private facility.
Legal papers signed around her.
Corinne, trying to save Laura, recreated trauma her own mother fled.
That explained why she became increasingly desperate about cabinet.
Inside was proof her father had warned her.
Then Ethan asked:
“Is this what terrified you when Maisie pointed?”
Corinne shook her head.
“No.”
“What then?”
“There’s one more thing.”
She reached behind William’s packet.
A small sealed evidence bag.
Inside:
a child’s silver anklet.
Engraved:
M.C.
Maisie Carter.
Ethan stared.
Maisie had never worn anklet.
Corinne whispered:
“I found it in Laura’s room at Hale.”
“Why would it have Maisie’s initials?”
“I thought Laura had ordered it.”
Laura had not.
Then forensic test showed anklet manufactured nineteen years earlier.
