Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Looked Like Julia
The woman was not Julia Bennett.
Facial recognition and vehicle registration identified her within hours.
Natalie Bennett.
Julia’s daughter.
Rachel’s niece.
Twenty-seven.
Rachel had not seen Natalie in almost nine years.
Family estrangement followed Julia’s death.
No fake death.
No secret resurrection.
Natalie lived in Colorado and recently returned to town.
Why watch Carter house?
She admitted it.
She had been investigating St. Catherine.
Her mother Julia worked hospital records before death from cancer.
Julia left files suggesting Bellweather migration project reused older patient-test architecture.
Natalie believed hospital had buried her mother’s warnings.
She contacted Michael Grant anonymously.
Michael initially ignored her.
Then his office was burglarized.
Natalie denied burglary.
Did she send blanket?
“No.”
Did she know bracelet?
“Yes.”
Michael had shown photograph before they fell out.
Why fall out?
Natalie wanted public leak.
Michael wanted controlled audit.
Then Natalie admitted she had been outside Carter house because anonymous message told her:
THE BRACELET WILL SURFACE AT 7:15. WATCH ELEANOR.
Someone orchestrated audience too.
Rachel received message.
Grace received spoofed instruction.
Natalie received message.
Eleanor received blanket.
Someone wanted Eleanor’s reaction observed.
Why?
Natalie produced Julia’s old note:
ELEANOR CARTER KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO TEST INFANT 17.
Emma stared.
“Test infant?”
Rachel cautioned:
“Could mean synthetic record.”
Exactly.
Infant 17 was not living baby.
It was seventeenth simulation profile in older 2018 system test.
But name attached:
ROSE.
Eleanor reacted visibly.
Emma noticed.
“Rose?”
Eleanor looked away.
The backyard moment returned.
When she had seen bracelet, before fire, she had whispered “Not again.”
Richard now remembered.
“What happened with Rose?”
Eleanor resisted.
Then surrendered.
Five years earlier Carter Foundation funded neonatal records pilot.
During testing, synthetic profile ROSE CARTER accidentally attached to Rachel’s stillbirth bereavement record.
Rachel never knew.
Eleanor did.
She sat on foundation quality committee.
She demanded correction but agreed not to notify Rachel because hospital argued no clinical impact and disclosure would cause unnecessary pain.
Rachel stared at her.
“You decided I didn't deserve to know my dead daughter’s record had been mixed with a fake baby?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Yes.”
That was why bracelet terrified her.
History appeared repeating.
First Rose.
Now Sophie.
Someone knew Eleanor’s old silence.
Someone expected guilt to make her panic.
And it worked.
Then Natalie produced Julia’s second note:
IF THEY EVER CREATE ANOTHER CARTER CHILD, CHECK THE DATE BEFORE THE NAME.
Emma looked at Sophie’s bracelet.
March 14.
Not Sophie’s birth date.
Not necessarily code 314-17 alone.
Maybe date mattered after all.
Hospital calendar showed March 14 was anniversary of Rose test-record incident.
Someone deliberately scheduled drill that day.
Who approved?
Laura Vale.
Laura said coincidence.
Then Rachel asked:
“Who named the old test baby Rose?”

Laura looked toward Eleanor.
“Eleanor did.”
