Chapter 4 - The Birth Record
Sophie Carter was Emma and Daniel’s biological daughter.
That was established carefully rather than assumed.
Emma consented to independent DNA testing after investigators explained why it might resolve fears created by bracelet.
Daniel returned home immediately.
He was horrified by backyard incident and furious with Eleanor.
DNA results showed overwhelming biological maternity and paternity consistency.
No baby switch.
No stolen infant.
No hidden daughter belonging to Rachel.
Sophie was exactly who Emma believed she was.
So why anonymous woman screamed “Where is my daughter?”
Rachel explained.
She had received message telling her:
YOUR DAUGHTER’S BAND IS AT CARTER HOUSE.
In panic she used phrase emotionally.
She did not literally believe living infant was hers.
Her Sophie had died five years earlier, documented by independent medical records.
Rachel had never questioned it.
Emma felt sympathy, but anger remained.
“Someone used your dead child to send you here.”
“Yes.”
“And used my living child to frighten us.”
“Yes.”
Someone wanted two mothers to collide.
Why?
Investigators examined March 14 drill.
It was not ordinary exercise.
St. Catherine had recently installed new infant-identification system.
The drill tested whether wrist/ankle bands remained correctly linked during emergency evacuation.
Twenty synthetic infants.
Twenty synthetic mothers.
Sophie Carter was one.
Three days later Emma arrived in labor.
Her actual daughter was born.
System reused an internal numeric sequence.
Real Sophie’s record inherited a dormant training cross-reference for approximately seventeen minutes before technician corrected it.
No clinical care was affected.
But audit log showed someone accessed that seventeen-minute error.
User:
ELEANOR.CARTER.
Emma stared at her mother-in-law.
Eleanor denied ever accessing hospital system.
She had no credentials.
The login was not personal account.
It belonged to donor-family portal created because Eleanor chaired Carter Family Foundation.
Portal should only show charitable program metrics.
Someone used it to enter restricted audit environment.
That meant compromised permissions.
Then Daniel asked Eleanor a question.
“Why didn't you tell us about blanket yesterday?”
Eleanor's answer:
“Because the note inside said Emma already knew.”
Emma froze.
“What note?”
Eleanor had destroyed it.
She burned it in fireplace.
Richard exploded.
“You destroyed evidence?”
“I thought it was blackmail.”
“What did it say?”
Eleanor recited from memory:
ASK EMMA WHY SOPHIE WAS REGISTERED BEFORE SHE WAS BORN.
Emma felt everyone look at her.
“I didn't know.”
Eleanor studied her.
“I believe you now.”
“Now?”
“Yesterday I didn't.”
That hurt.
Then Daniel asked:
“Why would someone want Mom suspicious of Emma?”
No answer.
Rachel examined hospital audit printout.
One line caught her eye.
Training record Sophie Carter had been reopened the night real Sophie was born.
Not by Eleanor account.
By:
RBENNETT.
Rachel’s old employee ID.
Rachel stared.
“I left St. Catherine eighteen months ago.”
Someone was using credentials belonging to two women.
