Chapter 3 - The First Sophie Carter
There had been a Sophie Carter at St. Catherine on March 14.
That much was true.
But hospital counsel immediately warned against assuming she was a real newborn.
The bracelet number began with T-9.
Training designation.
Three days before Emma gave birth, St. Catherine conducted emergency neonatal evacuation drill.
Staff created temporary simulated infant profiles.
One dummy record was:
Sophie Carter.
No actual baby attached.
No birth certificate.
No biological mother.
No disappearance.
Emma almost collapsed with relief.
Then why did Rachel believe otherwise?
Because Rachel had worked at St. Catherine.
Not as nurse.
As patient-registration supervisor.
She had participated in drill.
“Sophie Carter” was not randomly generated.
Rachel had entered name.
“Why Sophie?”
Rachel hesitated.
“My daughter was going to be named Sophie.”
Emma stared.
Rachel had been pregnant five years earlier.
Her daughter was stillborn at thirty-one weeks.
The child’s name:
Sophie Bennett.
The loss had devastated her.
During later hospital drill, Rachel used Sophie as dummy first name without thinking through emotional consequences.
“Carter?”
Random surname from synthetic-data list.
Except Emma’s surname was Carter.
Coincidence?
Possible.
But Rachel revealed another connection.
Emma’s husband Daniel Carter—currently away on business and not at party—served on St. Catherine charitable advisory board.
The Carter family donated to neonatal wing.
Their surname appeared frequently around hospital.
Rachel may have absorbed it unconsciously.
So bracelet could be meaningless training artifact.
Then why Eleanor said “That isn't the baby you brought home”?
She explained badly.
She had found training bracelet hidden with unfamiliar blanket and assumed someone was suggesting baby swap.
She panicked and interpreted evidence before verifying it.
But Rachel wasn't satisfied.
“There were two bracelets.”
Investigators looked at her.
During 2023 drill, two Sophie Carter bands were printed.
One wrist band.
One matching ankle band.
Both should have been shredded.
Rachel destroyed one herself.
The other vanished.
The bracelet found in Sophie’s blanket was missing one.
Who kept it for three years?
Rachel received anonymous photograph six months ago showing missing bracelet beside a newborn footprint card.
Caption:
YOU REGISTERED THE WRONG SOPHIE.
She initially believed cruel harassment connected to stillbirth.
Then another message came after Emma’s real Sophie was born:
THE CARTER BABY COMPLETES THE FILE.
Rachel tried contacting hospital compliance.
No response beyond routine acknowledgment.
Then Eleanor received blanket.
Someone was connecting two unrelated Sophies deliberately.
Emma asked:
“Why?”
Rachel shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then Richard turned bracelet over.
Inside clasp was a handwritten number.
314-17.
Rachel stared.
“That wasn't there during drill.”
“What is it?”
Rachel whispered:
“March 14 to March 17.”
Emma looked toward Sophie.
Three days.
The exact gap between bracelet date and Sophie’s birth.
