Rachel’s account should have been disabled when she resigned.
It wasn't.
A vendor migration preserved several inactive accounts.
That explained access.
Not identity.
Cybersecurity logs traced Rachel credential to hospital administrative terminal.
Security footage showed a man using it.
His face partially visible.
Richard recognized him.
“Michael Grant.”
Emma knew name.
Michael was former financial controller for Carter Family Foundation.
Eleanor fired him two years earlier.
Why?
Unauthorized transfer.
Approximately $180,000 moved from neonatal-support fund into temporary reserve account.
Michael claimed he was preventing funds from being absorbed during hospital merger.
Eleanor called it misconduct.
Independent audit found money fully intact and returned, but Michael had violated controls.
He resigned.
No criminal charge.
Could this be revenge?
Investigators located Michael.
He denied harassing family.
He admitted accessing Rachel’s dormant account.
Why?
Because he was investigating St. Catherine.
He believed hospital had manipulated Carter Foundation donation records.
Using inactive credentials was unauthorized and potentially criminal.
But he claimed motive was whistleblowing.
He reopened Sophie training record because its numeric identifier matched invoice:
SC-31417.
Exactly handwritten number on bracelet.
314-17 was not date range.
It was invoice code.
Emma felt first assumption collapse.
SC-31417 represented:
St. Catherine Systems Conversion — Project 31417.
A $640,000 software contract.
Vendor:
Bellweather Medical Data.
Carter Foundation funded half.
Michael believed Bellweather overbilled hospital.
He used Sophie Carter dummy record as test because it exposed migration error.
Then who wrote 314-17 on bracelet?
Michael admitted.
“I did.”
Everyone stared.
He had kept bracelet after finding it in discarded training materials? He found it in archived test kit, wrote invoice code, used as physical reference while investigating.
But he did not place it in Sophie’s blanket.
Six months earlier his office was burglarized.
Only investigation box stolen.
Included bracelet.
So anonymous sender had Michael’s evidence.
Who?
Michael suspected Bellweather.
Then why target Emma?
Because real Sophie’s birth record contained seventeen-minute migration error demonstrating software flaw.
If publicly exposed, hospital and Bellweather could face major liability.
But no harm occurred to Sophie.
Still, somebody might want family pressure to suppress investigation—or redirect it into sensational baby-swap story so financial/software issue looked ridiculous.
Rachel said:
“They made us ask whose baby she is instead of asking what system did.”
Exactly.
Then Emma asked Michael:
“Who knew you were investigating SC-31417?”
Three people.
Hospital CFO.
Bellweather project director.
And Eleanor.
Emma turned.
Eleanor went still.
“You knew about bracelet?”
“Not bracelet.”
“You knew Michael was investigating.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I thought he was trying to embarrass foundation.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“That’s what you always think when someone brings you something inconvenient.”
Eleanor had reason distrust him.
But again, she had chosen secrecy.
Then Michael produced copied invoice.
Bellweather project director:
LAURA VALE.
Rachel went pale.
“What?”
Emma looked at her.
