Chapter 11 - Eleanor’s Terrible Plan
Eleanor had discovered Aaron’s blackmail attempt two days before party.
An anonymous email:
YOU BURIED ROSE.
NOW YOU’LL BURY SOPHIE.
DESTROY WHAT ARRIVES OR EVERYONE LEARNS WHAT CARTER FOUNDATION DID.
Attached were Rachel’s footprint scan, Rose committee records and SC-31417 invoice.
Eleanor initially believed Aaron—or whoever sender was—possessed evidence of a real baby identification disaster.
She contacted private counsel.
Counsel told her preserve everything and contact authorities.
She did neither immediately.
Instead she tried identify sender herself.
Another message arrived:
PINK BLANKET TOMORROW.
BURN IT IN THE FIRE.
NO POLICE.
Eleanor decided to make sender believe she complied while secretly preserving bracelet.
Her plan was reckless.
She replaced Sophie’s normal blanket with planted one because she wanted tracker remain where sender expected.
At party she noticed Natalie watching.
She assumed Natalie was blackmailer.
She saw Richard near fire pit.
She decided to throw bundled Sophie toward him, expecting him to catch her while outer blanket passed near flame.
The goal: create visible appearance that blanket was thrown into fire while Richard rescued Sophie.
But Richard caught entire bundle.
Only corner ignited.
Plan failed.
Worse, she gambled with infant safety.
Emma stared at her.
“You used my daughter as a prop.”
Eleanor began crying.
“Yes.”
There was no noble reinterpretation.
She may have believed she was protecting family from blackmailer.
She still endangered Sophie.
Richard's voice shook.
“You could have removed Sophie first.”
“Then whoever was watching would see.”
“So?”
“I thought they'd release records.”
“And you thought records were worse than risking Sophie?”
Eleanor could not answer.
That silence was answer.
Control and reputation had overtaken judgment.
Emma refused let Eleanor hold Sophie afterward.
Investigators considered criminal consequences based on evidence and local law; family wealth would not erase conduct.
Then why did Eleanor tell Richard open blanket immediately?
Because once throw failed to destroy blanket, she abandoned deception.
Seeing tiny flame near Sophie shocked her into realizing enormity.
She wanted tracker and bracelet exposed.
Her “That isn't the baby you brought home” line?
Eleanor admitted it was not statement of fact.
It was fear.
She had read Aaron’s message:
THE SOPHIE IN THAT BLANKET IS NOT THE SOPHIE CARTER IN THE HOSPITAL SYSTEM.
Technically true.
Hospital system contained synthetic Sophie Carter plus real Sophie Carter.
Eleanor interpreted literally under panic.
She had begun suspect baby switch.
Again Aaron weaponized ambiguous language.
Then Emma asked:
“Who was woman shouting from house?”
Rachel.
Her arrival was manipulated.
No second mother claiming Sophie.
No stolen child.
So central mystery increasingly clear.
But bracelet’s date remained.
Why March 14 specifically?
Because training drill.
Why three days before birth?
Coincidence shaped by Emma going into labor three days later.
But Aaron’s notes contained:
MARCH 17 WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT.
That suggested real Sophie’s birth timing mattered.
Could Aaron have influenced labor?
Medical review found no evidence.
Emma went into spontaneous labor at thirty-nine weeks.
No drugs.
No intervention before admission.
So what did note mean?
Maybe not biological event.
Hospital admission.
March 17 was scheduled system migration launch.
Emma arrived same day.
Real Sophie became first Carter infant processed through Bellweather live migration.
Aaron knew.
That was why her record linked to synthetic Sophie.
Not because someone planned her birth.
Because software launch and birth coincided.
Then Michael found payment.
Bellweather received $320,000 milestone bonus March 18 for “zero identity reconciliation failures.”
But Sophie’s seventeen-minute cross-link was a failure.
Someone suppressed it to secure bonus.
