Chapter 5 - Claire Came Back

Claire Mercer entered the hidden nursery with empty hands.
The two operatives immediately blocked her.
Leo recognized her.
His entire face lit up.
“Cwaire!”
Claire stopped.
Whatever expression she had prepared disappeared.
She looked at the baby.
“Hi, bug.”
Leo toddled toward her.
The operative stopped him gently.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Please don't scare him.”
Mason arrived minutes later with Emma.
Emma crossed the room.
SLAP.
Claire accepted it.
“Who are you?”
“Claire Mercer.”
“That's not your real name.”
“No.”
“What is?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“Claire Bennett.”
Adrian went still.
He knew the surname.
Dr. Samuel Bennett.
The researcher who created ORION.
The man who died three years earlier.
Claire was his daughter.
Emma looked between them.
“Your father worked for Adrian?”
“He built the technology Adrian calls his.”
Adrian immediately objected.
“ORION belonged to Vale Dynamics.”
“My father disagreed.”
There it was.
A corporate dispute.
Potential motive.
But Claire denied orchestrating the tactical assault.
She had returned because she saw smoke from the highway.
“Why did you leave Leo before the explosion?”
“I received a message from Emma.”
Emma shook her head.
Again.
Someone had used her phone.
The message told Claire to pick up medication.
The pharmacy had no prescription waiting.
Claire realized something was wrong and drove back.
“Why infiltrate our family?”
Claire looked at Leo.
“My father left something.”
“ORION?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Samuel Bennett’s final message to Claire said:
I hid ORION where Vale will protect it without knowing he has it.
Claire assumed Samuel meant inside Adrian’s estate.
She became Leo’s nanny to search the mansion.
She discovered the tunnel.
Then discovered something worse.
Someone else was already using it.
“Who?”
“I never saw them.”
Objects moved.
Doors opened.
Food appeared in the bunker.
Someone maintained the secret nursery.
Claire added nothing to it.
Not the crib.
Not the photographs.
Not the surveillance system.
Even Adrian looked shocked.
“I thought the nursery was original.”
Claire shook her head.
“The bunker is original. The nursery isn't.”
Someone had constructed a hidden room specifically for Leo before Claire ever entered the family.
Mason asked:
“When?”
Claire had dated the paint.
Approximately eighteen months earlier.
Leo was twelve months old now.
The nursery had been prepared six months before he was born.
Emma sat down.
“That’s impossible.”
Unless whoever built it knew Emma was pregnant before the family publicly announced it.
Adrian stared at the photographs.
The earliest showed Emma leaving a fertility clinic.
Pregnant.
Only six weeks.
“How did they know?”
Claire approached the wall.
One photograph had always bothered her.
She removed it.
Behind it was a memory card.
Mason inserted it into an isolated device.
A video opened.
Samuel Bennett appeared.
Alive.
Recorded eighteen months earlier.
Claire covered her mouth.
Her father looked exhausted.
“If you're watching this, Claire, I failed.”
She began crying.
Samuel continued.
“ORION was never stolen.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“I destroyed it.”
Everyone stared.
“Because what we created wasn't navigation software anymore.”
Samuel looked directly into the camera.
“It could predict human movement.”
Adrian whispered:
“No.”
Samuel continued.
“Not perfectly. But well enough to know where someone would run before they decided to run.”
Mason looked toward the pool tunnel.
The tactical team.
The explosion.
Leo’s escape.
The bottles.
Every movement had seemed anticipated.

Samuel’s final sentence changed the entire mystery.
“Someone rebuilt ORION.”
