Chapter 14 - Daniel's Real Assignment

Daniel had not infiltrated the family to hurt Leo.

That was the first surprise.

He had infiltrated them to watch Victor.

Kane suspected Victor faked his death.

Daniel was assigned to find him.

Then Daniel became close to Emma and Leo.

Another person changed by proximity.

He began feeding Kane incomplete information.

Hiding Victor’s visits.

Deleting footage.

Protecting the family while pretending to spy on them.

But two weeks earlier Kane discovered the betrayal.

He threatened Daniel’s sister.

Daniel surrendered a bottle he believed contained Samuel’s root key.

Victor had already replaced it with a decoy.

“Then Daniel isn't running to Kane,” Emma said.

Mason understood.

“He's running from him.”

They traced Daniel’s vehicle.

Abandoned three miles away.

A second car picked him up.

Driver:

Claire Bennett.

Claire stared at the screen.

“I’m standing here.”

Her identity had been cloned.

The vehicle belonged to Samuel Bennett.

Declared destroyed in the laboratory fire.

Evelyn whispered:

“Samuel.”

Claire turned.

“No.”

No body ambiguity this time.

Samuel’s remains had been identified.

Victor confirmed it personally.

Samuel was dead.

Someone was using his car and Claire’s identity.

A final impersonation.

Then Mason found the destination.

Old Vale Dynamics research campus.

Abandoned.

Victor knew immediately.

“ORION’s first laboratory.”

They went.

Emma refused to leave Leo with anyone connected to the conspiracy.

Police protection accompanied them.

No cinematic baby infiltration now.

Leo slept in his car seat through most of the drive, sunglasses gone, one sock missing, looking exactly like what he had always been beneath the absurd red suit:

A tired one-year-old.

At the laboratory they found Daniel.

Alive.

Waiting.

He held the bottle.

Mason approached carefully.

“Where’s Kane?”

“Coming.”

“Why bring the key here?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Because this is where Samuel told me to.”

Claire froze.

“You knew my father?”

“Yes.”

Before Samuel died, he discovered Daniel was working for Vanguard.

Instead of exposing him, Samuel recruited him.

Daniel became a double agent.

His instructions were simple:

If the archive ever opens, bring the root key to Lab One.

“Why?”

Daniel pointed toward an old server rack.

“Because the key isn't for the archive.”

Victor’s face changed.

Samuel had lied to everyone.

The physical device inside the bottle did not verify files.

It opened something else.

Daniel inserted it.

Power came alive.

A hidden system booted.

Not ORION.

Video.

Thousands of recordings.

Lantern meetings.

Vanguard operations.

Private admissions.

Original unedited evidence.

Samuel had known digital documents could be dismissed as fabricated.

So he created a physical evidence repository disconnected from all networks.

The archive in the mansion was bait.

This was the real evidence.

Claire began crying.

Her father had spent his final months building a case.

Kane arrived outside.

Police surrounded the campus.

He did not fight.

He negotiated.

“If you release those recordings, governments fall.”

Mason answered:

“Then they can explain themselves.”

But Emma stopped him from pressing anything.

Everyone looked at her.

Again, she refused the obvious choice.

Public dumping could expose innocent subjects.

Children.

Medical records.

Victims who never consented.

Kane smiled.

“You see? She won't release it.”

ORION had predicted that.

Emma looked at him.

“You're right.”

Kane’s smile grew.

Then Emma handed the evidence drive to a federal judge who had arrived with investigators.

“I’m not releasing it.”

Her expression remained calm.

“I’m preserving it.”

Kane’s smile vanished.

Not destruction.

Not public release.

Lawful evidence preservation through multiple independent courts and journalists under protective orders.

A third choice.

Again.

The model had offered two likely reactions.

Emma invented another.

Mason almost smiled.

Subject L-0.

Then Daniel looked at Leo.

“There’s something you still don't know.”

Emma tightened her grip on the baby.

“What?”

“Samuel didn't choose you because you broke ORION.”

“He didn't choose me at all.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Exactly.”

He looked toward Victor.

“Tell her.”

Victor’s face lost all color.

Emma stared at him.

“Tell me what?”

Victor whispered:

“ORION wasn't built to predict you.”

May you like

He looked at Leo.

“It was built because of you.”
