Chapter 3 - Thirty-Eight Feet Down

There was another level.
Mason found the elevator behind a mirrored panel.
The mansion plans showed solid foundation beneath them.
Wrong again.
Someone had spent enormous money building spaces that officially did not exist.
Mason left two operatives with Leo.
He took Carter and Diaz into the elevator.
The tracker dropped from thirty-eight feet to twenty.
Then twelve.
Then stopped.
Doors opened.
Darkness.
Concrete walls.
Emergency lights.
A corridor extended toward a reinforced chamber.
Mason heard breathing.
Not Emma.
A man.
“Vanguard!”
No response.
They advanced.
A figure lay beside the chamber door.
Unconscious.
Alive.
Mason rolled him carefully.
He wore a mansion security uniform.
Carter recognized him.
“Daniel Price. Head of security.”
Daniel slowly woke.
His first word was:
“Leo?”
“Safe.”
Relief flooded his face.
“Emma?”
“We thought you could tell us.”
Daniel tried to stand.
“She's inside.”
The reinforced chamber required two authentication codes.
Daniel knew one.
Emma knew the other.
“Why were you down here?”
“Emma called me this morning.”
Daniel explained.
For three months Emma had suspected someone was accessing the mansion’s private network.
Cameras activated while the family slept.
Doors unlocked without logs.
Nursery temperature changed remotely.
Nothing dangerous happened.
But someone was watching.
Her husband, Adrian Vale, dismissed it as a software problem.
Emma did not.
She hired Daniel privately to investigate.
They discovered a hidden surveillance architecture installed before Adrian bought the mansion.
Then they found the pool tunnel.
The nursery.
The vault.
Emma had never known any of it existed.
That changed Mason’s assumption.
Emma had not built Leo’s escape route.
Someone else had.
“Then how did Leo know how to follow it?”
Daniel swallowed.
“That's the terrifying part.”
The lights and melody had been added recently.
Within the last three months.
Someone with access to Leo had taught him the pattern without Emma realizing.
Mason thought of nanny games.
Musical toys.
Colored lights.
Simple repetition.
Someone close.
“Who spends the most time with Leo?”
“Emma.”
“Besides Emma.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Nanny. Grandparents. Adrian.”
The reinforced chamber opened.
Inside, they found Emma.
Her wrists were secured to a chair.
No visible serious injuries.
Conscious.
Furious.
Mason freed her.
“Leo?”
“Safe.”
Emma closed her eyes.
For one second she nearly collapsed from relief.
Then:
“The bottle.”
“We found the key.”
“No. His second bottle.”
Mason showed it.
Emma took it.
“That isn't his.”
“What?”
“Leo has one bottle.”
Mason remembered the surveillance footage.
Leo emerging from the tunnel.
Taking out a second bottle.
Someone had placed it in the hidden nursery.
The tracker had led them to Emma.
Whoever designed the escape wanted the tactical team to find her.
Not abduct Leo.
Rescue Emma.
“Who locked you down here?”
Emma looked toward Daniel.
“I never saw his face.”
A masked person attacked her after she returned home.
She woke inside the chamber.
The attacker played a recording.
“He said the house would explode at noon.”
“Why?”
“To make Leo run.”
“How would he know Leo could use the tunnel?”
“I don't know.”
Emma's breathing changed.
Then she remembered something.
“Last month Leo started playing a game with Adrian.”
Mason leaned forward.
“What game?”
“Adrian would play three notes. Leo would follow little blue lights through the house until he found his bottle.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at Emma.
Emma’s face slowly changed.
“No.”
Mason did not accuse anyone.
Not yet.
“Where is Adrian?”
“New York.”
Daniel checked.
Adrian’s private jet departed that morning.
Passenger manifest listed Adrian Vale.
But airport facial-recognition footage showed his assistant boarding.
Not Adrian.
Emma stared.
“My husband is still here.”
Then every emergency light shut off.
A voice came through the darkness.
Calm.
Male.
Familiar to Emma.
“Good. You finally found her.”
May you like
Emma whispered:
“Adrian?”
