Chapter 13 - The Third Bottle

Emma almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the entire nightmare had somehow reduced itself to three baby bottles.
The first contained a key.
The second carried Samuel’s authentication relay.
The third contained milk.
At least that was what Evelyn claimed.
Victor took it from her.
Unscrewed the base.
Another compartment.
Empty.
Evelyn stared.
“That isn't possible.”
Victor looked at her.
“You lost it.”
“Lost what?” Emma demanded.
Evelyn finally explained.
Samuel’s final physical storage device.
The root key capable of verifying every document in his archive.
Without it, Lantern could claim the files were fabricated.
Samuel had hidden the root key inside a bottle before his death.
Victor found it.
Moved it.
Evelyn believed Victor placed it in Leo’s emergency kit.
That was why she triggered the bunker protocol.
Not to steal DNA.
Not to test Leo.
To force every prepared bottle into circulation so she could identify which held the root key.
“But none of them do,” Victor said.
Evelyn looked genuinely frightened.
“Then Kane has it.”
Mason understood.
Vanguard had intercepted one of the bottles before today.
Which one?
They audited household footage.
Leo owned dozens of identical bottles.
Claire prepared them.
Emma washed them.
Adrian used them.
One disappeared two weeks earlier.
Claire assumed it had been misplaced.
It had been taken during a pediatric appointment.
The clinic.
Again.
Kane already possessed Samuel’s root key.
Then why invade the mansion?
Because he lacked the archive.
Now Emma had decrypted it for him.
Kane needed only to combine both.
The bunker speakers activated.
“Thank you, Emma.”
Kane.
Claire immediately disconnected the terminal.
Too late.
Data transfer:
100%.
Samuel’s archive had been copied remotely.
Adrian struck the console.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Victor whispered:
“We gave him everything.”
Not quite.
Emma noticed Samuel’s final message remained open.
One sentence appeared after the transfer.
ROOT VERIFICATION FAILED.
Kane’s voice disappeared.
Then:
ARCHIVE COPY CORRUPTED.
Claire stared.
“My father anticipated this.”
Samuel had built one more trap.
The root key did not merely verify the archive.
It determined which version decrypted.
Without the correct physical key present during authentication, an external copy became mathematically useless.
Kane had a key.
But apparently not the correct one.
A decoy.
Victor began laughing.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You switched them?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Everyone slowly looked toward Leo.
Impossible.
Obviously.
Leo had no idea what any key was.
But someone close to Leo could have switched bottles without attracting attention.
Emma.
Adrian.
Claire.
Victor.
Evelyn.
Or—
Daniel.
The head of security had disappeared.
Mason checked the lower chamber.
Empty.
Daniel had left while everyone watched Samuel’s recording.
Security footage showed him entering the pool tunnel.
Then leaving the mansion through an emergency outlet.
Carrying a baby bottle.
Emma stared.
“Daniel had the real key?”
Victor shook his head.
“He shouldn't even know it exists.”
Mason checked Daniel’s employment history.
Four years at Vale security.
Before that:

Daniel Price had worked for Richard Kane.
