Chapter 12 - The Dead Grandfather

Victor had not died.

His funeral had been closed-casket after a private-plane crash.

No body publicly identified.

Adrian had accepted the DNA confirmation.

Now Claire examined the report.

Laboratory owned by a Vanguard subsidiary.

Mason swore quietly.

Lantern had manufactured Victor’s death.

Why?

Samuel’s files answered only partly.

Victor Vale had been an early investor in behavioral prediction.

He funded Malcolm-level secrecy before ORION had a name.

He believed human unpredictability was an engineering problem.

When Samuel discovered Subject L-0, Victor became fascinated.

Years later, he discovered L-0 was Emma.

Then arranged for Emma to meet Adrian.

Emma stared at her husband.

“Our meeting wasn't accidental.”

Adrian looked shattered.

They had met at a museum fundraiser.

Victor invited both.

He claimed coincidence.

It wasn't.

Victor wanted Subject L-0 inside his family.

Adrian’s marriage became an experiment without either spouse knowing.

Then Leo was born.

Victor disappeared.

Why fake his death after getting what he wanted?

Because he no longer trusted Lantern.

Another reversal.

Victor’s private letters revealed growing fear.

Lantern wanted Leo monitored from birth.

Victor initially approved.

Then held his grandson.

Everything changed.

One letter:

A model can call him L-1. I cannot. His name is Leo.

For the first time, Victor saw the human cost of the system he built.

He purchased the mansion.

Installed the hidden nursery.

Prepared an escape route.

Not to study Leo.

To hide him if Lantern came.

The bizarre secret room was protection built by a guilty grandfather.

But Victor did not trust Adrian enough to tell him.

He feared Adrian would confront Lantern and expose the plan.

So he faked his death.

Then disappeared to dismantle the network from inside.

Emma felt conflicting anger and relief.

Victor had manipulated their marriage.

Then tried to protect the family he manipulated into existence.

No clean heroes.

No simple villains.

Mason received a signal.

Evelyn’s relay had been traced.

Inside the mansion.

Everyone froze.

“She never left?”

“No.”

Evelyn was somewhere above them.

Then the steel door behind Leo—the door that had begun opening immediately after his escape—appeared on another camera.

Beyond it was not empty white light anymore.

A man stood there.

Older.

Silver hair.

Thin.

Alive.

Adrian whispered:

“Dad.”

Victor Vale stepped into the control room.

Leo stared at him.

Then smiled.

“Papa.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked devastated.

Leo knew Victor.

Someone had been bringing the supposedly dead grandfather to see him.

Claire whispered:

“Who?”

Victor answered from the monitor.

“Evelyn.”

The woman they thought Victor might be fighting had been helping him.

Until today.

Victor looked directly into the camera.

“Get Leo out of the bunker.”

Mason asked why.

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Because Evelyn didn't trigger the explosion to open Samuel’s archive.”

“Then why?”

Victor looked behind him.

“She needed the bunker doors unlocked.”

A shadow moved in the white light.

Victor turned.

Evelyn Cross stepped beside him.

May you like

And in her hands was not a weapon.

It was a third milk bottle.
