Chapter 11 - What Evelyn Never Told Claire

Claire looked toward the speaker.

“Dad?”

Recorded.

Again.

But Samuel’s message was unmistakably directed toward this moment.

“Evelyn will tell you she rebuilt ORION to destroy it.”

Emma stared.

That was exactly what Evelyn had said.

Samuel continued.

“She believes that.”

Evelyn disconnected.

Her audio channel vanished.

Claire whispered:

“She ran.”

Mason sent Carter to trace the relay.

Samuel continued.

“Evelyn isn't malicious. That makes her more dangerous.”

He explained.

Evelyn believed prediction technology itself was neutral.

Only institutions corrupted it.

Samuel eventually concluded the opposite.

Once a system became good enough at predicting human behavior, people in power inevitably began shaping environments to make predictions come true.

That was what happened to Emma.

Lantern did not merely observe Subject L-0.

It manipulated her childhood study.

Teachers.

Opportunities.

Even family interventions.

Not enough to control her life.

Enough to test whether predictions improved.

Emma’s eyes filled.

Her childhood had been partially engineered by strangers collecting data.

Evelyn knew.

Worse.

She had participated.

Claire looked sick.

“My father worked on it too.”

“Yes,” Samuel said from the recording, almost as though answering her.

“I did.”

He did not absolve himself.

That gave the confession weight.

Samuel helped build the machinery.

Then spent his final years trying to expose it.

Evelyn wanted to prove ORION could be fixed.

Samuel wanted it buried.

The archive was not merely evidence against Lantern.

It contained the only complete map of every surviving ORION derivative.

Servers.

Contractors.

Models.

Access points.

Enough to dismantle the network.

Or take control of it.

That was why everyone wanted it.

Kane.

Evelyn.

Perhaps Adrian.

Emma looked at her husband.

“Did you know about Lantern?”

Adrian hesitated.

Wrong answer.

“How much?”

“Vale Dynamics had a defense contract.”

“How much?”

“I knew ORION was being evaluated.”

“Did you know about me?”

“No.”

“Leo?”

“No.”

She searched his face.

Then Samuel’s recording revealed another document.

A contract signed by Adrian six years earlier.

Project Lantern Behavioral Integration.

Adrian stared.

“I've never seen that.”

His signature was there.

Digital certificate valid.

Claire examined metadata.

Signed from Adrian’s executive device.

Emma stepped away from him.

Adrian looked genuinely frightened.

“Emma, I didn't sign it.”

Mason had heard that sentence from guilty people.

He had also heard it from innocent ones.

Evidence needed context.

Then Claire noticed the date.

Adrian was hospitalized after a climbing accident that week.

Unconscious for two days.

Someone used his credentials.

Who had access?

His chief operating officer.

His attorney.

And his father.

Victor Vale.

Emma went still.

Victor had introduced Emma and Adrian.

Victor had recommended their fertility clinic.

Victor had purchased the mansion as a wedding gift.

Victor had died eighteen months earlier.

The same month construction began on the secret nursery.

Another dead man at the center of everything.

Except Samuel’s recording contained a photograph dated four months ago.

May you like

Victor Vale.

Alive.
