Chapter 2 - The Empty Bottle

The milk bottle had not been empty when Leo sat beside the pool.

Every member of Mason’s team had seen him drinking from it.

Yet when operative Carter retrieved it from the water, there was no milk.

No liquid.

No hidden drive.

Nothing.

Except a false bottom.

Carter twisted it.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a brass key.

Mason stared at the body-camera feed.

The entire operation changed in that instant.

The baby was not carrying something valuable accidentally.

Someone had deliberately hidden a key inside an object Leo would keep close.

The second bottle in Leo’s hands suddenly mattered too.

“Don't touch either bottle,” Mason ordered.

Then he looked at the secret nursery.

Leo had become fascinated with a stuffed elephant.

He sat on the floor, completely unconcerned with the adults in armored clothing entering behind him.

One operative lowered his weapon.

“Boss.”

“I know.”

Whatever briefing they had received, Mason was no longer treating a baby as a hostile target.

He removed his helmet.

Then his face covering.

He crouched several feet from Leo.

“Hey, little man.”

Leo stared.

Mason pointed at the elephant.

“Nice elephant.”

Leo offered it to him.

Mason almost laughed.

Then Leo pointed toward the steel door.

“Mama.”

The recording had ended.

Mason replayed it.

Emma’s warning was specific.

Someone wants them to believe Leo is the target.

Who had recorded it?

When?

And why had the tactical team been given exactly the information needed to make them chase him?

Mason called their coordinator.

No answer.

He checked the encrypted assignment.

The sender credentials belonged to Vanguard Response Group.

His own employer.

But Mason noticed something subtle.

The authorization code ended 7K4.

Vanguard field codes never ended in even numbers.

He opened the metadata.

Cloned credentials.

Their mission was fake.

Someone had impersonated Vanguard command and sent five armed professionals into the mansion.

The explosion had probably been designed to trigger Leo’s escape.

Which meant the hidden tunnel was not merely an emergency feature.

Someone wanted Leo to use it today.

Mason looked at the baby.

“You're not escaping them.”

He glanced around the secret nursery.

“You're leading us somewhere.”

Leo suddenly stood.

Still holding the second bottle.

He toddled toward the far wall.

Three musical notes sounded again.

A section of shelving unlocked.

Mason’s team exchanged looks.

Leo pushed against it.

The shelf moved several inches.

Behind it was another corridor.

“How does he know this?” Carter whispered.

“He doesn't.”

Mason noticed tiny lights installed along the floor.

They blinked one at a time.

A path.

Leo was following the lights.

Someone had trained him through repetition.

Not to infiltrate anything.

Not to behave like an operative.

Simply to follow familiar sounds and lights during an emergency.

The absurd escape suddenly had a practical explanation.

Months of conditioning disguised as a game.

Mason felt his anger growing.

Someone had built an emergency route around a baby.

Why?

The corridor ended at a vault.

No keypad.

Only a brass keyhole.

The key from the first bottle fit perfectly.

Mason inserted it.

CLICK.

The vault opened.

Inside stood a single white pedestal.

Nothing else.

On the pedestal was a red envelope.

Mason opened it.

One sentence:

IF LEO IS HERE, CHECK WHO STARTED THE FIRE.

Carter radioed the team upstairs.

The mansion’s fire-suppression logs had finally downloaded.

The explosion had originated inside the west utility room.

Gas ignition.

Remote trigger.

The trigger came from inside the mansion network.

Someone had been inside.

But security footage showed only Emma, Leo and the household staff leaving that morning.

Except Emma had returned unexpectedly at 11:42 a.m.

She entered through the garage.

She never appeared leaving.

Mason stared at the timestamp.

The explosion occurred at 12:06.

“Where is Leo’s mother?”

No one answered.

Then the second milk bottle began vibrating.

Leo giggled.

Mason carefully took it.

The bottom contained another compartment.

Inside was a tiny tracking device.

Its screen displayed one active signal.

Thirty-eight feet away.

Below them.

Someone was underneath the secret nursery.

May you like

And according to the label attached to the tracker, that signal belonged to:

EMMA.
