Chapter 7 - The velvet noose

The grand ballroom above was descending into a state of chaotic, panicked realization. The heavy exhaust fans Vincent had activated were roaring, pulling the air out of the massive room with noticeable force. The wealthy guests, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere and the disappearance of the armed waitstaff, were moving frantically toward the main mahogany doors, only to find them heavily barricaded from the outside.

Vincent emerged from the service corridors behind the main stage, carrying Lily in his arms. He took in the terrified crowd, the magnificent white-and-blush floral arrangements now looking like funeral wreaths under the warm champagne lighting.

Listen to me! Vincent bellowed, his powerful voice cutting through the rising panic like a thunderclap. His tailored black tuxedo was stained with soot, but his authoritative presence immediately commanded the attention of the elite crowd. Move immediately to the eastern terrace doors! The main exits are compromised! Break the glass if you have to!

The billionaires and socialites did not hesitate. Driven by the primal urge to survive, they surged toward the massive glass doors leading to the gardens, utilizing heavy gold banquet chairs to smash through the reinforced panes. The cold night air rushed into the ballroom, providing a vital escape route.

As the guests poured out into the safety of the estate grounds, Vincent set Lily down behind the heavy oak podium on the stage. Stay down, Lily. Do not move until I come back for you, he ordered gently, his blue eyes fierce with love.

He turned back to face the emptying ballroom. Standing at the far end of the hall, near the ruined, frosting-covered wedding cake, was Vanessa. She had not fled the estate. Her exquisite silver-white couture gown was torn and stained with soot, her elegant updo falling in messy, frantic strands around her face. She held her silver pistol, pointing it erratically at the few remaining guests fleeing through the broken windows.

It wasn't supposed to happen like this! Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated madness. The syndicate promised me the empire! They promised me the crown!

You burned the crown the moment you let them into our home, Vincent stated coldly, walking slowly, deliberately down the center aisle toward her.

Vanessa turned the weapon on him. Her hands shook violently. She was not a killer; she was a greedy socialite who had played a game far beyond her comprehension, and the consequences had finally broken her mind.

I'll shoot you, Vincent! I swear I will! Vanessa threatened, tears of rage and absolute terror streaming down her flawless, ruined face.

You won't shoot me, Vanessa, Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, calming cadence, continuing his slow advance. You don't have the stomach for murder. That is why you hired the henchman. That is why you relied on the gas. You are a coward pretending to be a queen.

Vanessa sobbed, her finger tightening on the trigger. The desperate, cornered animal within her prepared to fire.

But a sudden, terrifying sound echoed through the ballroom. It was not a gunshot, nor a police siren. It was the loud, mechanical hiss of the primary ventilation vents sealing shut.

The syndicate had bypassed Vincent’s override. The heavy, invisible cloud of the lethal nerve agent began to silently pour into the room through the secondary, automated diffusers hidden in the ceiling architecture. The twenty-minute countdown had reached zero.
