Chapter 10 - The dawn of ashes

The revelation shattered the very foundation of Vincent’s reality. He sat paralyzed in his study, the ghostly voice of his dead son echoing relentlessly in his mind. Richard had not died in the car crash. He had faked his own death, abandoning his daughter and his father, to assume control of the Serpent syndicate from the shadows. Vanessa hadn't been working for anonymous criminals; she had been taking orders directly from the man whose inheritance she was trying to steal.
Vincent stood up slowly, the weight of his sixty-seven years suddenly pressing down on his broad shoulders. He walked out of the study and down the quiet, carpeted hallway toward the guest bedroom where Lily was sleeping.
He opened the door gently. The little girl was curled up beneath a thick, white down comforter, her golden hair fanned out across the pillows. She looked so incredibly peaceful, entirely unaware that the monster hunting them was the very man who had given her life.
Vincent sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair from her rosy cheek. The profound, heartbreaking tragedy of the situation threatened to overwhelm him. He had spent his life building an empire to protect his family, only to discover that his own blood was the rot destroying it from within.
Lily stirred slightly, her enormous sapphire-blue eyes fluttering open. She looked up at her grandfather, offering a sleepy, trusting smile.
Grandpa, are you okay? Lily murmured, her tiny hand reaching out from beneath the blankets to touch his arm.
Vincent looked at the beautiful, brave little girl who had stared down armed mercenaries and saved his life without hesitation. The profound love he felt for her burned away the despair, leaving behind a cold, terrifying, and absolute resolve. He was no longer a mourning father; he was a warlord preparing for the most devastating, personal war of his life.
I'm perfectly fine, sweetheart, Vincent whispered, offering a gentle, reassuring smile that hid the violence brewing in his soul. I was just checking on you. Go back to sleep.
Lily closed her eyes, drifting effortlessly back into dreams, completely safe under the watchful gaze of her protector.
Vincent stood up, walking silently out of the room. He closed the door, the soft click echoing like a hammer striking an anvil. He retrieved his encrypted phone from the study and dialed his head of intelligence.
Marcus, Vincent said, his voice stripped of all warmth, vibrating with a lethal, unyielding command. Ground the corporate jets. Liquidate the secondary holding companies. Assemble the elite tactical teams and prepare them for international deployment.
Sir? Marcus asked, sensing the monumental shift in the patriarch's demeanor. What is the target?
Vincent looked out the towering penthouse windows at the dark, sprawling expanse of the city below. He saw not the glittering lights of Manhattan, but the ashes of a dynasty he was about to burn to the ground to eradicate the infection.

The target is my son, Vincent stated, the words an absolute, terrifying death sentence. We are going to war.
The screen cut to black, leaving the billionaire patriarch standing in the dark, ready to hunt down his own blood to protect the innocent soul sleeping in the next room.
