Chapter 1 - The crushed petals

The grand ballroom of the historic estate was a masterpiece of breathtaking, cinematic extravagance. Monumental crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, champagne-hued light over the ivory marble floors and the intricate golden wall moldings. Thousands of white and blush roses were meticulously arranged in towering floral monuments, filling the heavy air with an intoxicatingly sweet fragrance. Hundreds of elegantly dressed American high-society guests mingled in the golden light, their designer formalwear and glittering diamonds reflecting the immense wealth of the dynasty hosting the event. Yet, in the center of this flawless matrimonial celebration, a bizarre and unsettling scene was unfolding straight down the grand center aisle.

An enormous, five-tier white wedding cake, heavily decorated with hundreds of delicate pale-pink sugar roses, was moving unsteadily toward the front of the room. Beneath the oversized, white-draped cake board, only a little pastel-pink princess dress, tiny pearl shoes, and trembling hands were visible. This was Lily, the six-year-old impossibly adorable granddaughter of the family. Her golden-blonde hair was tied into two long braided pigtails secured with pink satin bows, framing delicate angelic features and rosy chubby cheeks. She was not carrying the massive weight of the cake, but guiding a concealed, lightweight rolling platform beneath it. Her huge sapphire-blue eyes were overflowing with heavy, terrified tears as she struggled to keep the towering confection balanced on the slippery marble.

She stumbled, her tiny pearl shoes slipping slightly.

It's too heavy, Lily sobbed, her sweet voice cracking with exhaustion and fear.

Vanessa stood walking beside the struggling child, her stunning features twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated cruelty. At thirty-two, the socialite was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing sculpted cheekbones, icy green eyes, and sleek dark hair arranged in a sophisticated updo. Her exquisite silver-white crystal-embroidered couture gown sparkled brilliantly, but the elegance was entirely eclipsed by her volatile arrogance.

Move faster, you little brat! Vanessa hissed, her jaw tightening as her eyes blazed with a desperate, frantic need to maintain control.

From the far side of the ballroom, Grandpa Vincent spotted the struggling little girl. At sixty-seven, the distinguished, strikingly handsome silver-haired billionaire patriarch still possessed a powerful, broad-shouldered physique that commanded absolute respect. His sharp blue eyes narrowed as he assessed the danger. In his impeccably tailored black tuxedo, he moved with remarkable, athletic speed, hurrying toward the center aisle.

He reached the rolling platform just as it began to tip dangerously to the side. He grabbed the heavy base with both of his large, powerful hands, steadying the massive cake effortlessly.

I've got it, sweetheart, Vincent said, his deep voice radiating a fierce, unwavering protection.

Lily looked up at him through her tears, profound relief washing over her rosy face.

Suddenly, Vanessa lunged toward them. Her icy green eyes were wild with panic as she reached aggressively for the cake, desperate to push it forward herself. Vincent immediately shifted the entire rolling platform away from Lily, blocking Vanessa's frantic advance.

Vanessa lost her balance. The heavy crystals on her gown pulled her forward, her designer heels slipping on the polished marble. In a dramatic, ultra-slow-motion collision, Vanessa's horrified, perfectly sculpted face rushed straight toward the upper tiers of the wedding cake. Her icy green eyes widened in absolute terror. Her mouth opened in a silent scream.

SPLAT.

Her face plunged directly into the soft, thick buttercream and the delicate sugar roses. White frosting burst outward in a spectacular macro explosion, sending crushed pink petals flying gracefully through the air. Vanessa pulled back violently, her glamorous face completely covered in thick layers of cream and ruined sugar paste, screaming in sheer, unmitigated humiliation.

Behind Vincent, Vanessa's muscular henchman charged forward. He wore a sharp black tuxedo, his slick dark hair and intimidating expression marking him as a man accustomed to violence. He reached for the patriarch.

Vincent did not hesitate. He turned and delivered one flawless, incredibly powerful cinematic punch directly to the henchman's jaw. The attacker stumbled backward, collapsing heavily onto the polished marble floor without a drop of blood spilled.

Lily ran directly into Vincent's arms, clutching his tuxedo jacket with her tiny hands. He knelt down, gently shielding her trembling body.

Vanessa angrily wiped the thick frosting from her eyes, her chest heaving with fury.

You have no idea what you've ruined! Vanessa shrieked, glaring at the patriarch.

Lily looked from the screaming woman to the damaged wedding cake. Her tears stopped instantly. The little girl leaned in, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.

She wasn't trying to stop the cake, Lily whispered to her grandfather.

Vincent looked down at the six-year-old, his protective instincts flaring into high alert.

Then what? Vincent asked quietly.

Lily pointed her small finger toward the damage Vanessa’s face had caused to the second tier. Beneath the broken sugar roses and the smeared buttercream, a tiny black metal corner protruded sharply from a concealed, hollowed-out compartment inside the cake itself.

She was trying to hide what's inside, Lily stated, her sapphire-blue eyes wide with innocent observation.

Vincent's sharp blue eyes locked onto the black metal object. His face hardened instantly into a mask of pure, calculating granite. Vanessa froze, the remaining frosting dripping from her chin as the horrible realization settled over her. The secret she had buried in the sugar was completely exposed.
