Chapter 5 - The phantom signal

Deep within the subterranean utility hub, the air was thick with the smell of ozone and humming server racks. Vincent dragged the unconscious mercenary into a dark corner, securing the man's hands with industrial zip-ties. He kept his newly acquired suppressed pistol raised, scanning the shadows as he guided Lily into the glowing, blue-lit server room. The walls were lined with massive, blinking mainframes that controlled the estate's sprawling technological infrastructure.

Vincent set the heavy, black metal device on a sterile steel workstation. He needed to analyze the threat before attempting to disable the jammer. He pulled a specialized, multi-tool from the pocket of his tuxedo and carefully pried open the outer casing of the device.

Grandpa, what are those numbers? Lily asked, pointing her tiny finger at the small, internal LCD screen that had suddenly illuminated.

Vincent stared at the screen. It displayed a rapidly descending countdown clock. Eighteen minutes remaining. Beside the clock, a complex line of code indicated a synchronized uplink with the estate's primary HVAC system. The realization struck him with the force of a freight train. The device wasn't just a communication jammer; it was a centralized detonator for a chemical payload wired directly into the air conditioning vents of the grand ballroom above.

Vanessa is going to gas the guests, Vincent whispered, his sharp blue eyes wide with pure, unadulterated horror. She sold us all to the Serpent.

He moved frantically to the main server terminal, typing with blinding speed. He needed to manually override the ventilation system and force the exhaust fans to vent the air outside, but the system was entirely locked out, overridden by the very device sitting on the desk.

I need the physical bypass key, Vincent muttered, searching the drawers of the workstation. It's a small, black magnetic card. The chief engineer always keeps it down here.

Lily watched her grandfather, her bright sapphire-blue eyes calculating. She reached into the pocket of her pastel-pink princess dress, her tiny hand pulling out a sleek, black magnetic keycard.

Is this it, Grandpa? Lily asked softly.

Vincent froze, staring at the card in her hand. Where did you get that, sweetheart?

When I was hiding under the table in the kitchen, Lily explained, her rosy cheeks pale but her voice incredibly steady. The bad lady dropped it when she was yelling at the men to push the cake. I picked it up so she couldn't find it.

Vincent knelt down, pulling his extraordinary granddaughter into a tight, desperate embrace. You are the bravest girl in the world, Lily, he whispered fiercely. You just saved hundreds of lives.

He took the keycard, sliding it into the master terminal. The screen flashed green. Access Granted. Vincent’s fingers flew across the keyboard, isolating the ballroom ventilation system and engaging the heavy, industrial exhaust fans to blow outward at maximum capacity. He then initiated a localized reboot of the communication grid, specifically targeting the frequency utilized by the local police department.

The jammer is disabled for exactly two minutes before it reboots, Vincent stated, picking up the heavy black device and securing it. The police are coming. Now we need to get you out of here.

Before they could turn toward the service elevator, the heavy steel doors of the utility hub slammed shut, the electronic locks engaging with a definitive click.

May you like

A slow, mocking applause echoed through the room. Vanessa stepped out from behind the server racks, holding a heavy, silver pistol aimed directly at Vincent’s chest. The muscular henchman stood beside her, aiming his weapon at Lily.

You always were a brilliant engineer, Vincent, Vanessa sneered, her icy green eyes burning with frantic desperation. But you are a terrible judge of character. Put the gun down, or my man puts a bullet in the child.
