Chapter 1 - the velvet shadows

The air inside the sprawling Beaumont estate carried a chill that the elaborate central heating system could never quite dispel. It had been precisely one month since the patriarch, Arthur Beaumont, had suffered a fatal and highly suspicious cardiac event, plunging the family into a suffocating period of mourning that felt more like a covert war. Emma Beaumont stood by the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of the western library, her delicate features illuminated by the silver moonlight cutting through the ancient oak trees outside. At twenty-nine, she possessed a breathtaking, quiet beauty. Her shoulder-length, glossy chocolate-brown hair fell softly against her fair, rosy skin, and her enormous hazel eyes constantly scanned the dark horizon. She had spent the last four weeks living like a phantom in her own home, avoiding the venomous, calculated strikes of her younger sister, Vanessa, who had aggressively seized control of the household staff the moment their father’s casket had been lowered into the earth. Emma touched the cold glass of the window, feeling the profound, crushing weight of isolation. She was the eldest daughter, the one who understood the intricate, cutthroat architecture of the Beaumont corporate empire, yet she was currently being treated as an exiled intruder.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the polished marble floor of the hallway, the rhythmic, commanding click of designer heels announcing a presence that demanded absolute submission. Vanessa stepped into the library, her luxurious golden-blonde hair pinned into a flawless, intricate updo. At twenty-five, she was exceptionally beautiful, possessing sculpted features and striking sapphire-blue eyes that currently burned with a cruel, arrogant confidence. She wore a sleek, casual ivory silk robe that likely cost more than the average employee’s yearly salary, looking entirely unbothered by the grief that was supposed to shroud the family. Vanessa did not offer a greeting. She walked directly to their father’s massive mahogany desk, casually flipping through a stack of sealed, confidential banking ledgers that Emma had been strictly forbidden from accessing. The silence between the two sisters was a toxic, vibrating entity. Vanessa thrived on this psychological warfare, leaving financial documents just out of reach, whispering instructions to the staff to ignore Emma’s requests, and constantly reminding everyone that she was the new favored heir. As Vanessa turned to leave, she paused at the threshold, offering a sweet, venomous smile. She informed Emma that the seamstresses were arriving tomorrow for the gala fittings, and casually mentioned that Emma’s budget had been severely restricted by the estate executors. The cruelty was surgical. But as Vanessa's footsteps faded, Emma knelt by the fireplace, retrieving a half-burned fragment of heavy parchment she had noticed earlier. It bore a partial signature and a notary stamp from a Swiss banking official. The estate was bleeding, and Emma realized the gala was not a memorial; it was a coronation Vanessa had engineered through absolute fraud.
