Chapter 6 - The whispers in the dark

The hum of the servers masked the heavy, suffocating tension inside the locked utility room. Vincent stared down the barrel of Vanessa’s silver pistol, his mind calculating a dozen different tactical scenarios in a fraction of a second. The presence of the henchman aiming a weapon at Lily entirely neutralized his ability to retaliate. He slowly, deliberately placed his suppressed pistol onto the steel workstation, keeping his hands visible.
You let a foreign syndicate wire this estate with poison gas, Vanessa, Vincent said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute disgust. You are trading the lives of your own friends for money you will never live to spend.
I didn't authorize the gas! Vanessa shouted, her composure cracking, the desperation bleeding through her arrogant facade. I only wanted the inheritance! They changed the terms. Now, you are going to open that device, use your retinal scan to authorize the transfer of the holding accounts, and then I will let you and the brat walk out the service tunnels before the gas deploys.
She is lying, Grandpa, Lily said. Her tiny voice was remarkably calm, carrying clearly through the room. Her hands are shaking. She is afraid of the man behind her.
Vanessa’s eyes widened in shock at the child’s profound, unnerving observation. The henchman shifted uncomfortably, his dark eyes narrowing at the little girl in the pink dress.
Shut up! Vanessa shrieked, pointing her gun at Lily.
Do not point that weapon at her, Vincent roared, the sheer, explosive power of his voice physically startling Vanessa, causing her to step back. You want my eyes, Vanessa? You want the billions? You let her walk out that door right now, and I will give you everything.
Vanessa sneered, regaining her footing. I don't negotiate with dead men. Open the drive.
Vincent picked up the heavy black device from the desk. He held it up, his thumb resting near the internal circuitry he had exposed earlier. He looked directly into Vanessa's icy green eyes, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips.
You clearly didn't study the engineering schematics of the device your masters gave you, Vincent said softly. This isn't just a detonator or an encrypted vault. It is equipped with a localized, anti-tamper thermite charge to prevent forensic analysis if captured.
Vanessa frowned, confusion warring with her panic. What are you talking about?
Vincent did not explain. With a swift, brutal motion, he jammed the metal edge of his multi-tool directly across the exposed lithium battery terminals inside the device.
A blinding, brilliant flash of white-hot thermite erupted from the black box, instantly filling the room with thick, acrid smoke and searing heat.
Vanessa screamed, shielding her eyes from the blinding glare. The henchman fired blindly into the smoke, the bullets ricocheting harmlessly off the heavy server racks.
Vincent didn't hesitate. He grabbed the disabled pistol from the desk, lunged through the thick smoke, and tackled the henchman with the devastating momentum of a freight train. They crashed heavily into the steel walls. Vincent utilized a brutal, specialized close-quarters disarm, stripping the weapon from the larger man and driving the butt of the pistol forcefully into the henchman’s temple. The man slumped to the floor, unconscious.
Vincent spun around, searching the smoke for Vanessa. But the socialite was gone. She had utilized the chaos to flee through the service doors, leaving her henchman behind in her desperate bid to escape the burning device and the impending arrival of the police.

Vincent dropped the weapon and rushed back to the workstation. He found Lily huddled safely beneath the heavy steel desk, coughing slightly from the smoke but completely unharmed. He scooped her into his arms, holding her impossibly tight.
Let's go, sweetheart, Vincent whispered, his chest heaving with exertion. We have to clear the ballroom.
