Chapter 2 - The velvet isolation

The whispers of the elite guests rippled through the grand ballroom like a sudden, chilling breeze. Vincent did not wait for Vanessa to recover her composure or for her fallen henchman to regain his footing. With the swift, decisive action of a man who had spent decades commanding global industries, Vincent reached directly into the ruined cake tier. He pulled away the remaining layers of sponge and buttercream, extracting a heavy, matte-black rectangular device. It possessed no branding, no visible ports, and featured only a small, deactivated digital screen.

Vincent grabbed Lily’s tiny hand, hoisting her securely into his arms. He turned his back on the chaotic scene, his broad shoulders shielding his granddaughter as he strode purposefully toward the private executive corridors at the rear of the ballroom.

Seal the main hall, Vanessa screamed behind them, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated panic. Do not let him reach the elevators!

Vincent moved rapidly through the velvet-draped hallways, bypassing the bewildered catering staff. He carried Lily into his private, oak-paneled study on the second floor, a soundproof sanctuary entirely disconnected from the festivities below. He set Lily down gently on a plush leather armchair and immediately engaged the heavy steel deadbolts on the mahogany doors.

He placed the black metal device onto his heavy wooden desk, examining it under the warm light of a reading lamp. It was incredibly heavy, encased in military-grade titanium. As he ran his thumb over the smooth surface, a microscopic biometric scanner on the corner illuminated with a faint, pulsing red glow.

Grandpa, what is it? Lily asked softly, kicking her tiny pearl shoes back and forth over the edge of the chair.

I don't know yet, sweetheart, Vincent replied, his voice calm despite the rising dread in his chest. But people do not hide innocent things inside wedding cakes.

Vincent pressed a hidden button beneath his desk, activating the estate's localized security grid. He expected to see the feed from the ballroom cameras on his monitor, but the screen displayed a wall of static. He tried to dial his head of private security, only to find the secure landline completely dead. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. The device on his desk was not a bomb; it was a high-powered, localized electromagnetic jammer. It had completely severed the mansion’s communication with the outside world, effectively turning the luxurious estate into an isolated, gilded cage.

A sudden, sharp knock echoed against the heavy mahogany door.

Vincent, open the door, Vanessa’s voice filtered through the wood, attempting to project a calm, reasonable tone that thinly veiled her desperation. You are overreacting. It is just a corporate gift for the groom. An encrypted hard drive. If you open this door, we can discuss this like civilized adults.

Vincent did not move toward the door. He looked at the heavy device, noticing a faint, metallic engraving on the underside. It was a stylized insignia of a silver serpent coiled around a dagger. He recognized the symbol instantly from his days expanding his shipping empire into Eastern Europe. It belonged to an international criminal syndicate specializing in corporate espionage and high-level extortion.

You brought the Serpent into my home, Vanessa, Vincent stated, his voice a low, lethal rumble that easily penetrated the heavy doors. You intend to hold my guests hostage to secure whatever files are on this drive.

A heavy, oppressive silence followed. Then, the sound of a heavy mechanical drill whining against the deadbolt echoed through the room. Vanessa was not negotiating; she was breaching. Vincent realized that the extravagant wedding was merely a sophisticated, highly choreographed trap, and he and his granddaughter were the primary targets.
