Chapter 9 - What Emma Took
Police reconstructed Emma’s last confirmed week.
She visited Northstar.
Retrieved Thomas envelope.
Drove home.
Argued with Ethan that night.
Ethan remembered argument about Lily’s preschool and his travel.
Nothing about Northstar.
Maybe Emma concealed.
Next day she met Claire for coffee.
Claire remembered Emma distracted.
She asked strange question:
“If something happened to me, would you make sure Lily knew I didn't leave because of her?”
Claire thought divorce anxiety.
She said yes.
Emma disappeared next morning.
Her car later found airport.
But new toll-camera review from archived database showed Emma’s car leaving airport garage two hours after she supposedly abandoned it.
Driver obscured.
Vehicle found there again later? Need consistency. Better someone moved it out/back? Too weird.
Instead airport records had timestamp error. Avoid.
Motel stay six weeks later proved alive.
She traveled by rental paid cash? Fine.
Private investigator found another confirmed sighting four months after disappearance at county records office.
Emma requested property file.
Property:
old Bennett family cottage.
Owned by Northstar.
She was following C19-B location.
Police searched cottage now.
Empty.
Recently cleaned.
Behind loose kitchen panel they found waterproof document sleeve.
Inside:
copies of Thomas’s fraud evidence.
And handwritten letter to Emma.
Emma,
If you are reading this, I failed to make board confront what happened. C19-B is not about Graham alone. Someone protected him because exposing him would expose the person who authorized Northstar to monitor my family.
No name.

Who monitored Bennett family?
Thomas owned Northstar.
Why would someone need authorization beyond him?
Board security committee.
Chair at time:
Richard Sloan.
Father of current board chair Rebecca Sloan.
Richard died three years ago.
Another dead end.
Then cottage yielded photograph.
Thomas.
Emma.
Helen Price.
Susan Bell.
No hidden affair.
Audit team.
On back:
CROWN REVIEW.
Claire finally understood why anonymous sender chose her dental crown.
The sender had access to old photograph and knew Helen was Claire’s dentist.
They constructed symbolic courier.
Someone wanted Claire drawn into Emma’s trail.
But who?
Lily’s claim “Mommy” remained unresolved.
Maya showed Lily photographs of women without leading labels.
Lily identified Emma correctly.
Then neighbor footage was enhanced enough to show partial profile.
Red hair? Emma had brunette? Current prompt Lily blonde, Claire brunette; Emma unspecified. We can make Emma auburn-haired. Need not conflict.
It strongly resembled Emma.
Not definitive.
If Emma was alive and approached house that morning, why not enter?
Why scare Lily with cryptic instruction?
Then Ethan received envelope.
No postage.
Left beneath windshield wiper.
Inside:
photograph of Lily at window that morning.
And note:
SHE RECOGNIZED ME.
Ethan’s hands shook.
Below:
CLAIRE WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HURT HER.
That meant sender had watched hallway confrontation.
But cameras disabled.
Unless another camera existed.
Police swept house.
Inside American flag wall frame they found miniature camera.
Not connected Bennett system.
Someone had watched Claire drag Lily.
Live.
And did nothing.
Maya’s expression hardened.
Whoever mystery source was, they were not simply protector.
They were running an operation around family.
Then camera storage produced one frame before remote wipe failed.
A woman’s face reflected in side window.
