Chapter 4 - Emma Bennett
Emma Bennett was not legally dead.
She had disappeared after driving away from Bennett home eleven months earlier.
Her car was found at airport parking structure.
No evidence of violence.
Passport records initially suggested she left country, but later investigators learned passport scan may have been administrative error involving canceled itinerary.
Emma and Ethan had separated three months earlier.
Their divorce was unfinished.
Custody of Lily was temporary and disputed but not hostile at outset.
Then Emma vanished.
Police found messages showing she had been frightened about something related to Bennett Biomedical Holdings, company Ethan had inherited minority stake in from father.
Ethan insisted he knew nothing.
No ransom.
No confirmed sighting.
No body.
After months, case went cold but remained open missing-person investigation.
Claire entered household more frequently after Emma vanished.
She had been Emma’s friend first.
Then Ethan’s.
No romantic relationship, Ethan insisted.
Claire helped with Lily and household administration.
Now Lily claimed Claire called mysterious duplicate crown “Mommy’s.”
Claire denied exact wording.
“I said it was about Mommy.”
“That isn't what Lily said.”
“She misunderstood.”
“What does my missing wife have to do with your dental crown?”
Claire’s eyes reddened.
“I was trying to find her.”
That was first real admission.
Three months earlier, Claire received anonymous envelope.
Inside:
small red memory card.
Photograph of Emma.
And note:
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY EMMA LEFT, MAKE SOMETHING NO ONE WILL SEARCH.
Claire feared Ethan might be involved because photograph was taken inside Bennett study.
She copied card contents onto secure device? Need no cyber details. She viewed it offline with help from private investigator.
Files included financial records, voice clips and dental scan.
Her own dental scan.
“Why yours?”
“I don't know.”
Then second instruction arrived.
CREATE A DUPLICATE OF CROWN 19.
Claire refused initially.
Weeks later someone sent photograph of Lily leaving preschool.
Claire panicked.
She complied.
Using dental office credentials? She admitted accessing Helen’s office with Helen’s permission? No, illegal. Better Claire bribed lab tech? But audit showed office login after hours. She entered office because Helen once gave emergency code? Let's keep wrongdoing.
Claire admitted she used old alarm code she knew from previous consulting work and submitted unauthorized duplicate order.
Crime potentially.
“Why put card in crown?”
“The anonymous sender told me to.”
“Why?”
“So I could carry it without whoever was watching knowing.”
“Who was watching?”
“I don't know.”
Ethan was furious.
“You received threats involving my daughter and told nobody?”
“I thought police leak was possible.”
“Based on what?”
“Files.”
“What files?”
Claire looked at Maya.
“One listed Detective Paul Reeves.”
Paul Reeves had worked Emma’s missing-person case.
Retired four months earlier.
Maya's expression tightened.
“What did it say?”
“Payments.”
From Bennett Biomedical vendor.
Could be legitimate security consulting.
Could be corruption.
Needed verification.
Then Maya asked most important question.
“Where is original red memory card?”
Claire looked toward floor.
“Gone.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
“Before you attacked Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Who took it?”
“I thought Lily did.”
That explained Claire lunging for object in Lily’s hand.
Not excused.
She believed three-year-old had picked up missing evidence.
“Where was card?”
“In newer crown.”
“Where did you hide crown?”
“Inside hallway console.”
“Why there?”
“Temporary.”
“When did you last see it?”
“Last night.”
“And Lily says yesterday she saw you put it in mouth.”
Claire closed eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I heard someone coming. I panicked and held it between my cheek and teeth for a few seconds.”
Lily saw.
Then Claire removed it and hid it.
This explained part of child’s statement.
But not why newer crown ended up on floor.
Nor why Claire’s actual fitted crown came loose during Ethan’s punch at exact same location.
Coincidence.
Or someone deliberately placed duplicate where Lily would find it.
Maya asked Claire:
“What was most important file on card?”
Claire whispered:
“A video of Emma.”
Ethan stood.
“Alive?”
