Chapter 13 - The Copy That Lied
Authentication took days.
C19-B was genuine Thomas-era archive.
But one page had been inserted later.
The page accusing Richard Sloan of ordering home intrusion used paper manufactured after Thomas died.
Forgery.
Someone contaminated evidence package.
Who had access?
Envelope behind flag appeared sealed.
But forensic examination showed seal reopened and resealed around four years earlier.
House belonged Ethan then.
Who had access?
Ethan.
Emma.
House staff.
Claire occasionally.
Security contractors.
Northstar.
Marcus.
Marcus admitted entering Bennett home four years ago during security upgrade.
Denied finding C19-B.
Flag frame had been removed during painting.
Contractor records showed Marcus personally supervised.
Opportunity.
Why insert forged page?
To make Richard Sloan look solely responsible and divert from whoever actually authorized home entries.
Richard was already dead by time forgery inserted? Four years ago, Richard Sloan died three years ago, so alive then. Could still.
Marcus finally asked for cooperation deal.
He admitted modifying archive.
He claimed Richard ordered.
Richard feared Thomas’s records would expose that Northstar operations had continued after board authorization expired.
Marcus inserted forged document exaggerating Richard’s role so if archive surfaced, blame looked like rogue board chair rather than broader operational misconduct.
But Marcus refused identify who continued authorizing.
Maya asked:
“Rebecca?”
“No.”
“Thomas?”
“No.”
“Graham?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Marcus said:
“You're asking wrong question.”
“What's right one?”
“Who had access to Bennett house after Thomas stopped Northstar?”
Answer:
Eleanor Bennett.
Ethan’s mother.
But she had no reason run corporate surveillance.
Marcus explained Eleanor privately hired Northstar to watch Thomas because she believed husband had resumed gambling? No prior gambling. Better suspected Graham blackmailing Thomas.
Eleanor feared Thomas would destroy family financially protecting company scandal.
She paid Northstar from personal account to monitor husband after board operation ended.
Not illegal in same corporate sense but invasive and possibly unlawful.
When she realized operatives entered home, she terminated contract.
Thomas discovered anyway.
Marriage deteriorated.
No murder.
No vast conspiracy.
Family secrecy layered over corporate misconduct.
Then why did Emma disappear eleven months ago?
Not because old C19 fraud alone.
Emma discovered Marcus had forged C19-B page recently.
She realized someone was actively manipulating historical evidence.
She suspected current threat.
Marcus contacted her.
She fled.
He never physically detained her.
He threatened legal exposure and told her she could lose custody if Ethan learned she had removed confidential records.
Emma panicked.
Her prolonged absence was own decision, worsened by manipulation.
Marcus exploited fear.
He did not force her to remain away eleven months.
Again truth refused simple villain.
Ethan asked Emma:
“Were you ever unable to come home?”
Emma looked at him.
“No.”
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because every month I thought coming back without proof would make everything worse.”
“For Lily?”
“For everyone.”
“That wasn't your decision to make for Lily.”
Emma nodded.
“No.”
Then Claire asked question nobody had answered.
“Who put duplicate crown on floor?”
Emma said she didn't.
Marcus said he didn't.
Helen didn't.
Claire hid it under console.
Lily found it several feet away.
Could simply have fallen.
But Lily insisted:
“Lady put it there.”
“What lady?”
“Mommy.”
Emma froze.
“I didn't go inside.”
Lily shook head.
“Other Mommy.”
Adults stared.
Three-year-old language again.
“Other Mommy” might mean another woman who resembled or played mother role.
Lily pointed at photograph on table.
Not Emma.
Not Claire.
She pointed to Eleanor Bennett.
Ethan’s mother.
Dead five years.
Impossible.
Unless Lily wasn't identifying person.
She was identifying necklace.
Pearl pendant Eleanor wore.
