Chapter 12 - Helen’s Confession

Helen did not deny buying phone.
She denied being mastermind.
“I bought it for Thomas.”
Thomas had been dead years.
Maya stared.
Helen corrected herself.
“For his instructions.”
Before death, Thomas created contingency plan.
If C19-B ever resurfaced without him, Helen was to ensure Ethan learned truth.
Thomas distrusted board, Northstar, and even own family.
He gave Helen sealed instructions.
She ignored them for years.
Then Emma disappeared.
Helen became afraid.
When Claire unexpectedly used her old office credentials to order duplicate crown, Helen realized Emma had activated Crown 19 trail.
She contacted Marcus because she believed he was still Thomas loyalist.
Huge mistake.
Marcus had switched loyalty to Richard Sloan years earlier.
Helen told him Ethan needed to see “both crowns”—meaning original C19 evidence package and backup, not literal dental crowns.
Marcus misunderstood phrase after learning Claire fabricated duplicate dental crown.
His reply referred physical objects.
Helen had not intended Lily involvement.
Why disposable phone?
Fear and paranoia.
Again, adults creating needless secrecy that endangered others.
But Helen had one important item.
Thomas’s sealed instruction.
She gave police.
It read:
If Emma Dawson ever asks about C19-B, tell Ethan everything. Emma is not threat. She helped me preserve audit when she was junior analyst. If she becomes part of our family someday, that is coincidence I never expected.
That eliminated theory Emma targeted Ethan romantically to infiltrate family.
Thomas wrote instruction in 2015.
Emma met Ethan socially 2016.
Their later relationship was not plan.
Then:
C19-B is stored where Richard Sloan cannot access without revealing his own surveillance.
Location omitted from copy.
Second sealed slip.
Helen had burned it years ago in panic after Thomas died.
She remembered only phrase:
BEHIND THE FLAG.
Everyone looked at one another.
American flag in Bennett hallway.
Police removed frame.
Camera Marcus installed was obvious recent addition.
Behind backing panel, deeper recess contained old metal envelope.
Placed during renovation nine years earlier.
C19-B.
It had been inside Ethan’s home all along.
Thomas owned house before Ethan.
Inside were documents.
But Maya refused reveal conclusions before authentication.
Claire asked:
“Then why did Emma need red marker?”
To prove envelope corresponded to original C19-B chain.
Marker fit inventory seal.
Now evidence complete.
What did C19-B show?
Partial review:
Graham Vale committed invoice fraud.
Richard Sloan concealed scope.
Thomas confronted both.
Northstar illegally exceeded authorized corporate monitoring.
No murder.
No child trafficking.
No secret medical experimentation.
But final folder was different.
FAMILY ACCESS.
It documented repeated unauthorized entry into Bennett residence by Northstar personnel between 2012 and 2015.
One operative used master key.
Name redacted.
Purpose:
retrieve documents Thomas kept at home.
Then 2015 incident report:
CHILD PRESENT — OPERATION ABORTED.
Which child?
Ethan had no child in 2015.
Lily wasn't born.
Emma wasn't living there.
Who was inside Bennett home?
Photograph attached.
A little boy, around six.
Standing beneath same American flag.
Ethan didn't recognize him.
Back:
NOAH — DO NOT APPROACH.
That looked like new mystery, but central two-tooth mystery still not fully solved. Could be future mystery, but hold till Ch15. Yet user wants central through 14. We can tease this as separate but avoid fully launching until 15. Fine.
Then Maya found another note in C19-B:
C-19 RED MARKER REPLACED WITH DUPLICATE.
There had been two red markers too.
May you like
Not only two crowns.
Someone had been duplicating evidence years before Claire ever made her ceramic copy.
