Chapter 14 - The Woman With Eleanor’s Necklace

The necklace belonged to Rebecca Sloan.

Not because she stole it.

Eleanor had given it to Rebecca years earlier.

Rebecca and Ethan grew up in same social circle. Eleanor was close to Rebecca’s mother.

Lily had seen old photographs of Grandma Eleanor wearing pearl pendant and called any woman wearing it “other Mommy” after Ethan once explained Eleanor was “Daddy’s mommy.”

Child logic.

No resurrection.

No secret grandmother.

Rebecca admitted approaching Bennett home that morning.

She had not disclosed because attorneys advised silence once investigation began.

Why was she there?

She received anonymous message:

C19 IS UNDER THE CONSOLE. IF CLAIRE FINDS OUT YOU KNOW, SHE’LL DESTROY IT.

Rebecca came intending retrieve evidence.

She saw Lily through window.

Emma arrived separately minutes later.

Both women were near house without knowing other present.

Rebecca entered through side door using old family access code.

She found duplicate crown beneath console.

Before she could remove it, she heard Claire.

She dropped crown.

Red marker fell out.

Rebecca retreated through side door.

Lily glimpsed her.

Then Emma appeared at window and whispered “find red.”

Lily searched.

Found crown and marker.

Claire saw.

Attack followed.

Thus seemingly impossible chain was convergence of three secret investigations.

Claire hiding evidence.

Rebecca trying retrieve it.

Emma trying guide its recovery.

Marcus watching through hidden camera.

And Lily caught center.

Maya was furious with all of them.

Every adult claimed protecting truth.

None protected child.

Rebecca produced anonymous message.

Who sent?

Marcus.

He admitted.

Why lure Rebecca?

He wanted her fingerprints/association on C19 evidence so blame could shift to Sloan family if archive emerged.

Why Emma arrive same morning?

Marcus had separately sent Emma message claiming Claire planned destroy marker.

He manipulated both women toward house.

Why?

To create confusion and retrieve marker afterward.

But Ethan came home early.

Claire attacked Lily.

Everything collapsed.

Then central question:

Why two identical ceramic crowns?

Claire made one duplicate six days earlier.

The other was her genuine fitted dental crown, manufactured fourteen months earlier.

Anonymous instructions deliberately told Claire to copy her own crown because sender—Emma—believed small crown case would disguise C19 marker.

Emma chose Claire’s dental crown because “Crown Nineteen” and Helen Price provided symbolic authentication Claire would understand.

But Emma had not anticipated Claire would physically conceal marker inside hollow duplicate itself.

That was Claire’s improvisation.

Her real crown loosened during Ethan’s punch and fell coincidentally beside duplicate.

Two identical teeth on floor were visually shocking coincidence created by Claire’s secret method.

Was that really all?

Maya wasn't satisfied.

“Why did Lily say ‘That’s not her tooth’ before anyone examined them?”

Because Lily saw Claire handling duplicate previous day.

She watched Claire briefly place it inside mouth when footsteps approached, then remove and hide it.

Lily understood that object was something Claire could take in and out.

When actual fitted crown fell, Lily recognized the other white object as “not her tooth.”

Simple.

Child observation adults underestimated.

Then why Claire screamed “Ethan, don’t touch it”?

Not because crown contained poison, DNA secret, or hidden identity.

Because duplicate contained C19 red inventory marker.

If Ethan picked it up, he might discover evidence Claire had hidden and learn she had been secretly investigating Emma.

Claire feared he would accuse her of Emma’s disappearance.

Her panic escalated into assault when Lily found it.

Nothing justified attack.

Claire’s motive was concealment and fear.

Not supernatural tooth mystery.

Not clone.

Not swapped identity.

Yet one issue remained before complete payoff.

Who actually caused Emma to disappear?

Marcus manipulated and threatened her.

But Emma chose to leave.

Did someone specifically order him?

His communications contained payments from dormant Northstar account.

Approver initials:

E.B.

Ethan Bennett?

Emma had seen initials and feared husband.

Ethan denied.

Rebecca said another E.B. existed.

Eleanor Bennett.

But Eleanor was dead before recent payments.

Then accounting found account approval token had never been updated after Eleanor’s death.

Marcus continued using her old authorization identity fraudulently.

No living secret E.B.

He had manufactured impression Eleanor—and later Ethan—authorized operations.

Marcus had been protecting himself.

Emma vanished because she mistook manipulated records for evidence Ethan might be involved, then let fear and obsession keep her away.

The explanation was painfully human.

And Ethan was not ready to forgive.

Neither was Lily old enough to understand.

Then Maya opened final authenticated C19-B folder.

The current mystery was solved.

But inside was photograph of unknown boy Noah from 2015.

And attached to it was one sentence Thomas Bennett had written before death:

NOAH WAS NEVER PART OF CROWN.

HE BELONGS TO THE HOUSE.

That secret had nothing to do with Claire’s teeth.

And tomorrow, Ethan intended to find out what it meant.
