Chapter 15 - The Final Unveiling

Emma pulled the top document out of the wooden box, her eyes widening as she read the names listed under the primary parental registry. Her fingers trembled against the yellowed paper as she turned to look at Ethan, her voice barely a whisper in the quiet basement archive.
"Ethan..." she said, her voice shaking with a realization that shattered everything they thought they understood about the past. "Look at the name of the mother on this record."
Ethan took the document from her hands, his eyes scanning the official seal. Listed under the biological mother's signature was not Emma’s mother, nor was it Catherine—the signature written in crisp blue ink belonged to Eleanor Carrington herself, dated thirty years ago, recording the birth of a daughter who had been given away to a private family in the countryside hours after her birth.
Emma was not an outsider who had coincidentally entered Ethan’s life, nor was she merely the daughter of a ruined business partner. She was Eleanor’s biological daughter—conceived in secret and discarded to protect the family’s public reputation before Eleanor married into the Carrington fortune. Eleanor had not hated Emma because she was a "commoner"; she had hated her because Emma was the living proof of a secret Eleanor had spent thirty years trying to erase.
Ethan looked at his wife, the realization crashing over him like a tidal wave. Before he could speak, Emma’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She pulled it out, her eyes locking onto a new text message from an untraceable international number.

The message read: You found the first page. Now ask Marcus who fathered the child.
Emma looked up at Marcus standing in the doorway, the old butler’s face turning deathly pale as he looked at the open safe, leaving the dark legacy of the Carrington family hanging open in the quiet room.
