Chapter 12 - The Signature

Eleanor glared at her son, her chest rising and falling as she weighed her options. She looked at her lawyers, but every one of them averted their eyes, unwilling to risk federal obstruction charges to save her pride. The wall of protection she had built around herself using money and fear had completely dissolved.
With shaking fingers, Eleanor picked up a heavy gold fountain pen. She signed her name across the bottom of the surrender documents, her signature ragged and uneven—nothing like the proud, elegant script she had used her entire life to command empires.

She threw the pen onto the desk, her eyes wet with furious tears as she looked up at Ethan. "You broke my heart today, Ethan," she whispered, her voice trembling with hatred. "You traded your family bloodline for a common girl who brought nothing to this house."
Ethan picked up the signed documents, inspecting the signatures with a cold nod. He looked down at Eleanor, his face unreadable as he delivered his final words before turning toward the door. "She didn't bring nothing, Mother," he said quietly. "She brought the truth."
