Chapter 9 - The Person Inside the House
Police and private security swept mansion.
No intruder.
“Still inside Bennett house” could mean household employee, not hidden person.
Twenty-three staff had access.
Only seven worked during Leo birth week.
Anna Reed, housekeeper.
Grace Ellis, cook.
Martin Cole, driver.
Two cleaners.
Estate manager David Price.
Security technician Owen Clark.
Ethan knew Anna best.
She had served family twelve years and helped after Rachel became ill.
Anna had also been first staff member to rush toward Leo after staircase incident.
Could she have altered document?
Anna denied ever entering archive.
Access records supported.
Estate manager David Price had administrative permissions.
He was Samuel Price’s nephew.
Could use uncle’s card?
David admitted he had borrowed it occasionally.
But denied red file.
Then forensic examiner found fingerprint on plastic sleeve of altered R-17B.
Not Diane.
Not Rachel.
Not Ethan.
Not Samuel.
David Price.
He went pale.
“I handled it.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
“Why?”
“Rachel gave it to me.”
Ethan froze.
Rachel had asked David retrieve blank signed R-17B from red file.
She believed Diane might destroy it.
David removed original, gave Rachel.
What did original say?
No Leo.
It listed Clara Dawson as designation custodian.
Rachel photographed it and returned.
Months later, after Leo born, David found same sheet in Jonathan’s desk—but now it said LEO BENNETT.
He assumed Rachel changed it.
“Did you ask?”
“Yes.”
Rachel said:
“I didn't do that.”
She became alarmed.
They planned forensic examination.
Then Rachel’s health deteriorated.
Investigation stopped.
After Rachel died, David hid document back in Jonathan’s desk because he feared Diane.
Why send anonymous key to Ethan?
He admitted.
“I did.”
So anonymous sender?
Some messages yes.
Not all.
David mailed key and first message.
He wanted Ethan discover paper without dragging Rachel’s unfinished investigation into public.
But he did not send later warning:
THE PERSON WHO DID IS STILL INSIDE BENNETT HOUSE.
Someone else had taken over anonymous channel? Different number maybe. Ethan assumed same due formatting, but forensics showed messages came from two VoIP accounts.
Second sender knew David’s actions.
Who watched him?
Security technician Owen Clark.
Owen maintained internal cameras.
Questioning revealed he had accessed archive footage at Diane’s request.
Diane had asked him monitor anyone entering Jonathan’s study after Rachel died.
Why?
“She said important family papers were disappearing.”
Owen saw David hide R-17B.
He photographed.
Did he alter?
“No.”
He had no motive.
Then Owen produced backup camera footage from week after Leo’s birth.
Someone entered Jonathan’s study carrying red file.
Face clear.
Diane.
Ethan stared at mother.
She had denied.
But footage showed Diane open file and remove R-17B.
She carried it to desk.
Ten minutes later left.
Could be alteration.
Diane finally admitted.
“I took it.”
“Did you print Leo’s name?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“I gave it to someone.”
“Who?”
Diane closed eyes.
“Margaret Hale.”
Name from 2009 committee.
Margaret had been Jonathan’s longtime trust administrator.
Now seventy.
Retired.
Diane had asked her determine whether Leo’s birth triggered old LB-01 provision.
Margaret reviewed sheet.
Then, according Diane, she wrote/printed “Leo Bennett” as a test designation? Need reason.
Ethan called Margaret.
She answered:
“Yes, I put Leo’s name on that page.”
Silence.
“But I didn't forge anything.”
“You altered signed document.”
“No. I created a demonstrative copy to show Diane what would happen if old database interpreted LB-01 incorrectly.”
Margaret had scanned original, digitally inserted Leo’s name on COPY and printed it.
It was supposed be stamped DRAFT — NO LEGAL EFFECT.
But stamp page? She says Diane tore off cover page.
“Why?”
Diane whispered:
“Because I wanted Rachel to believe Leo had claim.”
Ethan stared.
