Chapter 5 - The Name Underneath

Forensic document examiner inspected high-resolution photograph and remnants from Jonathan’s file.

R-17B had been altered twice.

Original typed designation had been chemically lifted or mechanically removed before “LEO BENNETT” was printed.

Indented impressions remained.

Partial letters:

...RA DAW...

Maria Dawson?

Ethan’s pulse accelerated.

Could original designation have been Maria Dawson?

But trust provision allowed qualifying protected beneficiary.

Possible.

If Jonathan intended mansion eventually support former L.B.-1 family, Diane might resent.

Yet Maria had left program years earlier.

Investigators located Maria.

Alive.

Fifty-two.

Living in Colorado.

She agreed video call after attorney assured privacy.

When Ethan showed photograph of newborn, Maria cried.

“That’s my son.”

His name:

Lucas Dawson.

Not Leo.

Now twenty? Born 2009, age17 in 2026. Actually current date 2026, newborn 2009 =17. Good.

Lucas was safe, finishing high school.

Caleb Dawson was biological father, confirmed by old court order.

Jonathan helped Maria obtain protective housing after Caleb’s violence.

No affair.

No Bennett paternity.

“Did Jonathan promise mansion to Lucas?”

Maria laughed through tears.

“Absolutely not.”

“Did he ever call Lucas Leo?”

“Yes. Staff called him Little Leo because his case number was LB-01.”

“Did he ever promise you permanent Bennett residence?”

“No. He helped me rent apartment.”

“Have you spoken to Diane?”

Maria’s expression hardened.

“Once.”

“When?”

“After Jonathan died.”

Diane had called asking Maria sign statement that she and Lucas had no claim against Bennett estate.

Maria thought absurd but signed because she wanted no connection.

Why would Diane seek waiver from someone with no claim?

Because Diane knew trust language could be interpreted broadly.

Then Ethan asked:

“Do you remember another Dawson connected to program?”

Maria thought.

“My younger sister.”

Name:

Clara Dawson.

Indented letters could be CLARA DAWSON.

Clara was twenty-two in 2009 and occasionally stayed with Maria.

She later worked for Bennett Foundation.

Where now?

Maria hesitated.

“She disappeared from our family about ten years ago.”

Not missing-person disappearance.

She changed name and cut contact after family conflict.

No known danger.

Then Ethan received another anonymous photo.

A woman standing beside Jonathan in mansion foyer.

Date:

2017.

Caption:

CLARA DAWSON — RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR.

So Clara had eventually become foundation employee.

Ethan remembered her under married name:

Clara Moore.

His late partner Rachel’s older cousin.

That connected families but not bloodline to Leo except through Rachel’s side? Clara Moore née Dawson was Rachel's cousin by marriage maybe. Let's keep clean: Clara married Rachel's maternal cousin Daniel Moore, making Clara cousin-in-law, not biological.

Ethan had met Clara once.

She left foundation before Jonathan died.

Could original trust designation have been Clara?

Samuel found personnel record.

Clara served as director of Legacy Beneficiary program.

She was authorized administrator, not beneficiary.

Maybe R-17B designated her as trustee/administrator rather than owner.

Then indentation examiner completed reconstruction:

CLARA DAWSON — DESIGNATION CUSTODIAN.

Not beneficiary.

The name “LEO BENNETT” had replaced custodian line, making document appear to grant occupancy directly to Leo.

So paper Ethan threw at Diane was not merely forged.

Its entire meaning had been manipulated.

Someone wanted Ethan to believe Leo “belonged” in mansion.

Why?

Then police recovered deleted email from Diane’s tablet dated fourteen months earlier—one month after Leo’s birth.

To Clara Dawson.

Subject:

HE NAMED THE BOY LEO.

Body:

I WARNED YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN IF ETHAN EVER FOUND OUT WHAT LB-01 MEANT.

Clara replied:

LEO’S NAME CHANGES NOTHING. KEEP THE CHILD OUT OF THIS.

Diane:

THEN COME BACK AND FIX WHAT YOU STARTED.

Ethan stared.

May you like

Clara Dawson wasn't missing.

Diane knew exactly where she was.
