Chapter 10 - Diane’s Plan
Diane had tried to frighten Rachel out of Bennett family.
Not with violence then.
With paperwork.
When Leo was born, Diane remained convinced Rachel had intentionally chosen name as reference to LB-01 and planned to use old trust language to seize mansion.
Margaret told her she was wrong.
To demonstrate, Margaret produced hypothetical R-17B showing what erroneous database interpretation might look like if “LB-01” were converted into “Leo Bennett.”
It had no legal force.
Margaret attached cover sheet:
ILLUSTRATIVE ERROR — NOT VALID.
Diane removed cover.
She showed altered-looking sheet to Rachel.
Her message:
“If you push this, lawyers will claim you manipulated trust to benefit Leo. Walk away before you ruin Ethan.”
Rachel immediately recognized document as false.
Instead of being frightened, she began investigating who had misunderstood LB-01.
That led to plant incident, Olivia Hart, Thomas Moore and Jonathan’s cover-up.
Diane’s intimidation attempt created very investigation she feared.
“Why did paper end up in Dad’s desk?”
Rachel gave it to David Price for safekeeping after telling him it might prove Diane had attempted coercion.
David later hid it in Jonathan desk after Rachel died.
Then sent Ethan key.
So central paper origin nearly solved:
Jonathan’s signature genuine because source page genuine.
“Leo Bennett” insertion by Margaret on demonstrative copy.
Diane removed warning cover and misrepresented it to Rachel.
No legal ownership effect.
But why did Diane react with absolute terror when Ethan threw it at her after Leo fell?
Because paper documented her earlier coercion against Rachel.
And because she knew Ethan would ask why.
But Ethan sensed more.
“You called Leo a bastard before I showed paper.”
Diane looked away.
“That came from LB-01 obsession?”
No answer.
“Leo is biologically mine.”
“I know.”
“Then why say it?”
Diane’s lips tightened.
“Because Rachel wasn't supposed to have your child.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“According to whom?”
“Your father.”
That seemed impossible.
Jonathan died years before Ethan and Rachel had Leo.
Diane went to safe and retrieved letter.
Jonathan’s handwriting.
ETHAN SHOULD NEVER BUILD A FAMILY AROUND THE MOORE CASE UNTIL HE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED IN 2010.
Not “never have child.”
Not condemnation.
A warning to disclose truth before Ethan formed family with someone connected to Moore case.
Jonathan apparently learned Ethan was dating Rachel before death.
He knew Rachel was Thomas Moore’s daughter.
He urged Diane tell Ethan about plant settlement.
She never did.
Instead she interpreted warning as Jonathan opposing relationship.
Why?
Because admitting plant truth would expose her own role.
Diane had served Bennett Manufacturing board safety committee in 2010.
She received maintenance warning six weeks before solvent leak.
She forwarded it to operations.
Then did nothing when operations delayed repairs.
She did not cause leak.
But she knew warning existed.
After accident, she voted for confidential settlement rather than immediate public disclosure.
Rachel’s father was injured partly within governance failure Diane had helped bury.
That was what Diane feared Rachel discovering.
Rachel did discover.
But Rachel did not seek revenge.
Her notes said:
DIANE MADE A TERRIBLE GOVERNANCE DECISION. THAT DOES NOT MAKE ETHAN RESPONSIBLE.
Diane had projected her own guilt onto Rachel.
And then onto Leo.
Ethan stared at mother.
“You hurt my son because his mother knew what you did fifteen years ago.”
Diane shook head violently.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because this morning I received something.”
She produced envelope.
Inside photograph of Leo.
Written across it:
THE FIRST LEO LOST HIS HOUSE.
THE SECOND ONE WON’T.
Diane whispered:
“I thought someone was using him to take everything.”
Ethan's anger didn't soften.
“So you attacked a fifteen-month-old child?”
Diane began crying.
“I panicked.”
“That isn't an explanation. It’s an admission.”
Then Ethan turned photograph over.
There was address.
L.B.-1.
Old beneficiary house.
And beneath:
COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO REALLY PUT LEO’S NAME ON THE BENNETT RECORD.

Margaret had inserted it on paper.
But apparently someone else had inserted Leo into database.
