Chapter 6 - Clara Dawson
Clara arrived with attorney.
Forty years old.
Calm until Ethan placed altered R-17B on table.
Then anger surfaced.
“I told Diane to destroy that.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“You created it?”
“No.”
“Then why destroy it?”
“Because it was a draft control sheet that should never have left archive.”
Clara explained Legacy Beneficiary program.
After Jonathan expanded trust’s social-use provisions, Clara managed records ensuring mansion could temporarily house approved protected families if vacant.
R-17 forms were internal routing sheets.
Not deeds.
Not ownership instruments.
R-17B originally listed Clara as designation custodian.
Jonathan signed bottom authorizing process.
Someone later altered middle section to say Leo Bennett.
Thus document Ethan waved at Diane had no independent legal power.
But Diane recognized it because she knew source.
“Who altered it?”
Clara looked at Diane.
“I assumed she did.”
Diane exploded.
“Why would I give that child rights?”
Exactly.
Clara admitted logic failed.
Then Ethan asked why Diane emailed her after Leo’s birth.
Clara sighed.
Because name “Leo” triggered old LB-01 scandal.
Not scandal involving Maria or Lucas.
Something happened after their departure.
In 2010, another family briefly used L.B.-1.
A bookkeeping mistake reused code LB-01.
Two different families appeared under same beneficiary number.
This caused records to merge.
Medical reimbursements.
Housing payments.
Emergency contacts.
Jonathan discovered years later.
He ordered correction.
But one merged field survived into residential trust system.
Field:
ELIGIBLE DESCENDANT SPONSOR — BENNETT, ETHAN.
Ethan stared.
He had been twenty at time.
Never sponsored anyone.
Clara said:
“It was data error.”
“Why my name?”
“Because someone used your employee-dependent number.”
Ethan had worked summer at foundation.
Could be clerical collision.
Diane interpreted it differently.
She believed Jonathan had secretly designated Ethan responsible for LB-01 family.
That fear became obsession.
When Ethan later named his own child Leo, Diane thought old record was resurfacing.
“She believed name was intentional message,” Clara said.
“It wasn't,” Ethan replied.
Rachel chose it.
Diane looked stunned.
“You didn't know?”
“No.”
“Rachel never told you?”
“Told me what?”
Diane shut down.
Now Rachel entered mystery.
Leo’s late mother had apparently known LB-01.
Ethan went home and searched Rachel’s files.
Rachel had worked as pediatric social worker before pregnancy.
One former employer:
Bennett Community Family Center.
She never told Ethan she had worked indirectly with his family foundation? Maybe she had said community center but not connection.
Employment dates:
2018–2021.
Clara was supervisor for first year.
Ethan called Clara.
“Did you know Rachel?”
Long silence.
“Yes.”
“How well?”
“She audited archived child-support cases.”
“LB-01?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“You'll have to read her notes.”
“What notes?”
Clara gave him storage box Rachel had asked her preserve.
Inside:
case summaries.
At bottom:
LB-01 DUPLICATE DESIGNATION.
Rachel had circled one sentence:
ETHAN BENNETT WAS NEVER THE SPONSOR.
Below:
SOMEONE USED HIS NAME BECAUSE THE REAL SPONSOR COULD NOT APPEAR.
Then another:
DIANE KNOWS WHO IT WAS.
Ethan sat back.
This was no longer about whether Leo belonged to mansion.
