Chapter 11 - The Database Entry

Ethan went with Detective Monroe rather than alone.

L.B.-1 property still existed, now privately owned but vacant during renovation.

No mysterious person waited.

Inside mailbox was flash drive.

Database export.

Bennett Residential Trust system.

Entry created five days after Leo’s birth:

QUALIFYING DESCENDANT: LEO JAMES BENNETT.

SPONSOR CHAIN: LB-01.

SUCCESSION PRIORITY: ACTIVE.

Unlike Margaret’s demonstration, this was real system entry.

But system entry did not automatically grant legal ownership.

It could trigger review.

Who entered?

Administrator credential:

MHALE-02.

Margaret Hale.

She denied.

Her account retired years earlier.

Legacy credential compromised.

IP address traced to Bennett mansion.

Specifically estate office.

David Price?

Owen Clark?

Diane?

Rachel?

Date five days after Leo birth.

Rachel was still hospital recovering from difficult delivery? She could not physically at mansion.

Diane was at hospital much day.

David was mansion.

Owen.

Anna.

Estate staff.

Computer logs showed USB device inserted 11:42 p.m.

Security camera from estate office had been deleted.

Backup?

Owen found fragment.

A woman entered.

Brown hair.

Long coat.

Not Diane’s silver? Diane maybe brunette? Prompt elegant burgundy, no hair specified. Let's avoid.

Face obscured.

Could be Rachel? She was hospitalized, impossible.

Anna brunette.

Grace brunette.

Clara maybe.

Then fingerprint on keyboard:

Clara Dawson.

Clara admitted she visited that night.

Why?

Diane called her.

She wanted Clara close old LB-01 trigger before system automatically notified trustees.

Clara logged in with her own credential, not Margaret's.

She found Leo already entered.

Timestamp preceded her arrival by twenty minutes.

She attempted delete.

System blocked because child birth record triggered protected audit.

She panicked and left.

Why no report?

She feared old plant case resurfacing.

Everyone protecting reputation again.

Then system architecture review revealed entry was not manually typed.

Automated migration.

A rule created in 2018:

If descendant birth certificate contains first name matching legacy beneficiary alias “LEO” and surname BENNETT, create provisional review record.

That was absurd.

Who wrote rule?

Jonathan’s outside database consultant.

Why would rule exist?

Because old LB-01 code had been incorrectly normalized as “Leo Bennett” during 2017 digitization.

Jonathan discovered error and ordered it flagged for manual review.

Instead consultant built crude matching rule to catch future collisions.

Thus Leo’s birth automatically triggered record because his actual name accidentally matched corrupted alias.

No person deliberately inserted him.

The “mystery entry” was software error.

Margaret's demonstration had been showing exactly that risk.

So no hidden claimant manipulating Leo.

Then who sent photograph and flash drive to L.B.-1?

Owen Clark admitted second anonymous messages.

He discovered database rule while investigating Diane’s request.

He wanted Ethan uncover without being fired.

Why theatrical secrecy?

“Because Mrs. Bennett controls my employment.”

Cowardly but understandable.

He had no larger plot.

Now nearly everything around paper was explainable.

But Diane’s attack remained.

No document compelled it.

No mastermind made her do it.

She saw Leo near staircase after receiving anonymous photograph, spiraled into belief Rachel’s family was using child to seize house, and committed unforgivable act.

Ethan would not allow mystery to become excuse.

Police investigation proceeded based on witness evidence, Diane’s statements and available footage fragments.

Then Margaret called.

“There’s one thing still wrong.”

“What?”

“The automated rule explains database.”

“And?”

“It doesn't explain why Jonathan kept LB-01 attached to Ethan’s descendant chain.”

“Clerical error?”

“No.”

“I found original handwritten instruction.”

“What does it say?”

Margaret read:

DO NOT DELETE LB-01 FROM ETHAN’S LINE.

HE WILL NEED TO KNOW WHY WHEN HE HAS A CHILD OF HIS OWN.

Ethan went silent.

His father intentionally preserved connection.

Not to give property.

To force future disclosure.

What disclosure?

Margaret whispered:

“Jonathan left a sealed letter for your first child.”

May you like

“Where?”

“Diane signed receipt for it eight years ago.”
