Chapter 8 - The catalyst of cruelty

Margaret’s icy blue eyes burned with a vicious, uncontrollable arrogance. Her daughter was not just embarrassing them; she was actively defying them in front of the most powerful man in the room. In Margaret’s world, disobedience was punished swiftly and visibly. She reached out, her hand wrapping tightly around the stem of a crystal wineglass resting on a nearby high-top table. The glass was filled to the brim with a heavy, expensive vintage.
Elena saw the micro-expression of malice cross her mother's face a fraction of a second before the movement began, but her military discipline demanded she hold her ground. She could not break her cover until the final command was given.
In an extreme close-up of pure, unadulterated cruelty, Margaret angrily tipped the crystal wineglass forward. She deliberately poured the deep-red wine directly across Elena's pristine champagne-silver satin bodice. The dark, crimson liquid splashed dramatically against the elegant fabric, spreading like a violent wound and streaming down the front of Elena's dress, completely ruining the immaculate gown.
Elena gasped, a sharp intake of breath as the cold liquid soaked through to her skin. Instinctively, she lifted both hands, hovering them over the ruined fabric, the sudden shock of the public humiliation momentarily piercing her stoic armor.
Nearby guests, chatting happily just moments before, froze in absolute disbelief. The lively music of the string quartet seemed to fade into a horrified, heavy silence as the surrounding elite stared at the vicious assault.
You look like you belong in the bargain bin! Margaret spat, her voice dripping with contemptuous venom, her beautiful aristocratic face twisted into an ugly mask of superiority.
The camera of the moment slowly pushed in on Elena. She stood frozen, the deep-red wine dripping onto the polished floor. She looked down at the ruined, soaked gown. The dress was destroyed, but the biometric sensors woven into the fabric were completely waterproof, still transmitting every hateful word to her tactical teams. She slowly raised her expressive hazel eyes toward Margaret. Her lips trembled slightly, a betrayal of the deep, lingering pain of a daughter rejected by her own mother, but Elena absolutely refused to cry. She pulled her emotions back behind an impenetrable fortress of iron discipline.
Victor stood directly behind Margaret. He did not offer a reprimand or a handkerchief. He looked at his daughter, standing humiliated and soaked in wine in front of a senior general, and he laughed cruelly. A harsh, booming sound that echoed the sheer toxicity of the Ross family.
Kevin smirked beside Victor, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive black tuxedo, thoroughly enjoying the destruction of his sister's dignity.
Go change, Elena, Victor commanded, his voice mocking and dismissive, treating her like a disobedient child rather than a grown woman. You're embarrassing this family.
In a medium close-up, Elena did not look down. She did not run away in tears as they expected. She stood perfectly still, taking one slow, deeply controlled breath. The tremor left her lips. Her hazel eyes hardened into brilliant, unyielding stones. She maintained unbroken, terrifying eye contact with Victor.

You have no idea who you're talking to, Elena said. Her voice was quiet, but it possessed a cutting, absolute authority that sliced through the laughter like a surgical scalpel.
Victor scoffed, rolling his eyes at what he perceived as a pathetic, empty threat from a broken woman. Margaret rolled her eyes in unison, turning her stunning blonde head away in sheer disgust, preparing to apologize to General Sterling for the interruption. But the apology would never leave her lips.
