Chapter 6 - The architecture of gold

The Grand Bellmont Hotel ballroom was a masterpiece of architectural arrogance, a sprawling, magnificent space designed to overwhelm the senses. Towering crystal chandeliers hung suspended from a ceiling adorned with golden frescoes, casting a warm, luxurious lighting over the hundreds of elite banquet guests. The room was a sea of expensive couture, flashing jewels, and the crisp, imposing lines of decorated American military officers in their finest dress uniforms. The air hummed with the sound of string quartets and the hushed, powerful conversations of people who controlled the fate of nations.
The Ross family entered the ballroom with the practiced, arrogant swagger of royalty. Margaret, stunning in her fitted royal-blue satin evening gown, immediately began working the room, her icy blue eyes locking onto wives of senators and defense contractors. Victor stood tall in his black military uniform, projecting the image of a revered elder statesman, while Kevin, smug and mocking in his expensive black tuxedo, scanned the crowd for his foreign contact.
Elena walked a few paces behind them, a silent, beautiful shadow in her champagne-silver satin. Her hazel eyes did not take in the glittering decor; they swept the room with tactical precision. She noted the heavy, fortified oak doors at the north and south exits. She spotted four of her undercover operatives disguised as catering staff, their posture slightly too rigid for true waiters. She saw the foreign diplomat—Kevin’s buyer—standing near the golden pillars of the east wall, sipping champagne with a forced, nervous smile.
Look at this room, Elena, Kevin whispered, stepping back to walk beside her, his voice dripping with condescension. This is where the real power is. Not in your little windowless office pushing paper. You should take notes. Maybe you could learn how the world actually works.
I am observing very closely, Kevin, Elena replied quietly, her voice calm and intelligent.
General Sterling has arrived, Victor announced suddenly, his commanding face lighting up with sycophantic eagerness. He gestured toward the grand entrance.
General Sterling, a distinguished, sixty-five-year-old senior American general with silver hair and a chest heavy with high-level commendations, entered the ballroom flanked by his security detail. He projected an aura of absolute, terrifying command. Victor immediately pushed his way through the elegant crowd, desperate to secure a moment of the General's attention.
Elena held her ground near a towering arrangement of white orchids, refusing to follow her father's desperate charge. Her earpiece crackled softly.
Target is moving, General, her tactical commander reported. Kevin Ross is approaching the foreign contact near the east wall. He has a small, black encrypted drive in his left hand.
Elena tracked her brother through the crowd. She saw the subtle, nervous shift in Kevin’s shoulders as he closed the distance to the diplomat. The treason was happening in plain sight, surrounded by the very military officers whose lives the data would endanger.

Hold positions, Elena murmured flawlessly, pretending to take a sip from a glass of sparkling water. Let the physical transfer occur. We need irrefutable proof of the exchange before we lock the room down.
She watched with cold, dignified restraint as her brother shook the diplomat's hand, the small black drive passing seamlessly between their palms. The crime was complete. The trap was sprung. Now, Elena just had to bring the hammer down on the entire family.
