Chapter 10 - The shadow of the eagle

The agonizing silence in the Grand Bellmont ballroom broke with the sudden, sharp crackle of static from General Sterling’s radio. The spell was shattered. The opulent, golden architecture of the room suddenly felt less like a palace and more like a beautifully constructed cage.

Elena did not break eye contact with Victor. Her champagne-silver dress was heavy with the deep-red wine, clinging to her graceful, slender figure, but she wore the stain like a badge of honor. She lowered her hand from the salute, her demeanor entirely shifting from the quiet, suffering daughter into the commanding force of a two-star general running an active, hostile tactical operation.

General Sterling, Elena said, her voice ringing clear and cold across the space between them. Execute protocol Vanguard.

Yes, Ma'am, General Sterling replied instantly. He raised two fingers in the air.

The heavy, fortified oak doors of the ballroom slammed open simultaneously. Dozens of heavily armed, tactical military police poured into the room, their black uniforms a stark, violent contrast to the elegant evening gowns and tuxedos of the guests. They moved with terrifying precision, forming a perimeter and securing the exits. The wealthy elite screamed and backed away, pressing themselves against the golden walls.

Kevin panicked. The survival instinct of a cornered rat kicked in. He spun around, desperately trying to disappear into the chaotic crowd, clutching his expensive black tuxedo jacket.

Detain that man, Elena ordered smoothly, pointing a steady finger directly at her brother.

Two massive tactical officers lunged forward, tackling Kevin to the polished floor. They ripped his arms behind his back, securing his wrists with heavy zip-ties. One of the officers reached into Kevin’s jacket pocket, pulling out the foreign diplomatic credentials of the buyer he had just met, along with a stack of bearer bonds.

Get your hands off me! Kevin shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria, struggling uselessly against the concrete grip of the officers. Father, do something!

Victor could not move. The retired lieutenant colonel was paralyzed, his silver hair seeming to age years in a matter of seconds. He stared at Elena, his mind desperately trying to reassemble the shattered fragments of his authority.

Elena... what is the meaning of this? Victor demanded, attempting to summon a final, pathetic shred of patriarchal command, though his voice trembled violently. You are arresting your own brother? On what grounds?

On the grounds of high treason, espionage, and conspiracy to sell classified Department of Defense logistics to an enemy combatant, Elena stated, her expressive hazel eyes burning with a cold, unforgiving fire. And you are under arrest as his primary financial conspirator, Victor.

Margaret let out a sharp, horrified gasp. She dropped the crystal wineglass. It shattered on the floor, mixing with the spilled wine. This is a mistake! Margaret cried, her stunning aristocratic face contorted with panic. We are a respected military family! You are ruining us!

You ruined yourselves, Mother, Elena replied, her voice devoid of any familial warmth. You sold out the very soldiers you pretended to honor. I spent two years tracking the leaks that got my operatives killed in Eastern Europe. I spent two years looking for the traitor, only to find the blood trailing all the way back to my own dining room table.

Elena gestured to the officers. Take them both.

Victor did not fight as the officers grabbed his arms, stripping him of his dignity in front of the entire military command structure he had spent his life trying to impress. He looked back at Elena, realizing that the quiet, unassuming daughter he had mocked and belittled was the executioner of his entire legacy.

As Victor and Kevin were dragged out of the ballroom, screaming protests that fell on deaf ears, Margaret collapsed to her knees in her royal-blue satin gown, weeping uncontrollably amidst the shattered glass.

Elena turned away from her family, feeling a profound, heavy emptiness. The revenge was absolute, but the cost was the final destruction of the illusion of her family.

General Sterling stepped forward, offering Elena a crisp, clean handkerchief. She took it, dabbing the worst of the wine from her face, her sophisticated low bun remaining perfectly intact.

Excellent work, General Ross, Sterling said quietly, his voice filled with genuine admiration. The rot has been excised.

Elena looked at the handkerchief, then up at the towering crystal chandeliers. She had secured the perimeter, but the war was never truly over.

It is a start, General Sterling, Elena replied softly, her hazel eyes looking toward the dark night outside the grand windows. But Kevin was just a courier. The people who bought that drive are still out there.

General Sterling nodded gravely, reaching into his uniform jacket to produce a small, heavily encrypted, black dossier. Then I suggest you change your dress, General Ross. We have a briefing in one hour. The syndicate goes much deeper than your father.

May you like

Elena took the dossier, the weight of the dark, unseen horizon settling onto her shoulders. She was a two-star general, a phantom in the military machine, and her true mission had only just begun.

The screen cut to black, leaving the magnificent ballroom to its silence, and the general to her war.
