Chapter 7 - The fracture of the illusion

The moment the black encrypted drive changed hands, the atmosphere in the golden ballroom shifted for Elena. It was no longer a high-society banquet; it was an active operational theater. She touched her silver hairpin, sending a silent, encrypted pulse to her tactical teams. The undercover operatives disguised as catering staff subtly abandoned their trays, moving with slow, deliberate precision to physically block the heavy oak exits. The grand ballroom was completely sealed. No one was leaving.

Kevin, completely oblivious to the invisible net tightening around him, strutted back toward the center of the room where Margaret and Victor were holding court with a group of lower-ranking defense officials. His sharp features were illuminated by a smug, victorious glow. He had just secured millions of dollars in untraceable offshore funds, believing himself to be the smartest man in the room.

Elena set her water glass down on a passing tray. It was time to pull the focus. She stepped out from the shadow of the white orchids, her graceful, slender figure moving deliberately toward her family. Her champagne-silver satin gown caught the warm, luxurious light of the crystal chandeliers, making her practically glow with a quiet, undeniable elegance.

Margaret noticed her approach, and her aristocratic face immediately twisted into a mask of vicious annoyance. Elena had explicitly been told to remain in the background, out of sight.

What are you doing? Margaret hissed, stepping away from her guests to intercept her daughter. I told you to stay near the perimeter. You are drawing attention.

I need to speak with Father and Kevin, Elena said, her expressive hazel eyes calm, refusing to yield to her mother’s icy glare. It is a matter of absolute urgency.

Victor, noticing the confrontation, excused himself from his sycophantic conversation and stepped over, his face flushed with anger. Kevin followed close behind, a mocking smile playing on his lips.

Have you lost your mind, Elena? Victor growled, his voice kept low but vibrating with rage. You are interrupting. Go back to the wall where you belong.

Elena did not flinch. She maintained perfect, dignified posture, looking directly into her father's eyes. I cannot do that, Victor. The event is over. You and Kevin need to come with me quietly, right now, before this becomes a public spectacle.

Kevin laughed, a sharp, cruel sound. A public spectacle? Are you drunk, Elena? You are a glorified secretary telling a room full of generals that the party is over.

You need to listen to her, Kevin, a calm, authoritative voice interrupted.

Elena did not turn around, but she recognized the voice instantly. General Sterling had materialized from the crowd, standing just behind Victor. The senior American general possessed a presence that demanded absolute silence.

May you like

Victor’s angry scowl instantly vanished, replaced by a fawning, desperate smile. General Sterling, sir! I apologize for my daughter's erratic behavior. She is not accustomed to such high-level environments. She was just leaving.

General Sterling did not look at Victor. His silver-haired, distinguished head was turned slightly, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene. The tension in the small circle became suffocating. Margaret, enraged by the perceived humiliation in front of a senior commander, decided to take matters into her own hands to forcefully remove the stain on their family image.
