Chapter 4 - The shadow command

Far removed from the opulent boutiques and mahogany dining tables of her family’s life, Elena sat in a subterranean, windowless command center located fifty feet below the Pentagon. The room hummed with the quiet, intense energy of high-level intelligence operatives working across glowing monitors. Elena stood at the head of a massive digital tactical table, her hazel eyes scanning the real-time data streaming across the glass. She was no longer wearing the trench coat or the champagne-silver gown. She wore her immaculate, decorated Army service uniform, the two heavy silver stars resting on her shoulders projecting absolute, unquestionable authority.
General Ross, a young intelligence officer said, approaching the table with a classified dossier. We have fully decrypted the hard drive you cloned from Kevin Ross's terminal. The data is catastrophic. He has been selling the architectural schematics of our forward operating bases in Eastern Europe to a known foreign adversary.
Elena’s face remained a mask of cold, intelligent stone. And the financial routing?
The officer swallowed hard, clearly uncomfortable delivering the news to his commanding general. The payments were routed through three offshore shell companies, but the final destination is a blind trust entirely controlled by your father, retired Lieutenant Colonel Victor Ross. He is the primary beneficiary of the treason, Ma'am.
Elena looked down at the digital map. The pain of betrayal had burned out of her system years ago, replaced by a fierce, protective duty to the men and women who served under her command. Her father wasn't just a loud, arrogant man living on past glories; he was actively endangering American soldiers to line his own pockets, utilizing his son as the point man.
What is the status of the buyer? Elena asked, her voice steady and commanding.
The foreign contact is confirmed to be attending the Grand Bellmont Hotel gala this Saturday under diplomatic cover, the officer reported. We believe Kevin Ross intends to hand over the final encrypted drive containing the active troop deployment schedules during the banquet.
Elena nodded, her brilliant tactical mind calculating the geometry of the operation. We do not arrest them before the handoff. If we strike now, they will claim the data was stolen or planted. We need to catch the transaction in progress. We execute the sting inside the ballroom.
The officer hesitated. Ma'am, the Grand Bellmont is a civilian environment filled with high-ranking dignitaries. A tactical breach could cause a massive panic. Furthermore, General Sterling will be in attendance. As the senior officer of the Joint Chiefs, his security detail will lock down the building if there is a disruption.

Elena turned to look at the officer, her expression perfectly composed. General Sterling is fully briefed on this operation. He is acting as my overwatch for the evening. When the time comes, the building will already be under our control. Prepare the strike teams for silent infiltration. No one leaves that ballroom until I give the order.
As the officer hurried away to execute her commands, Elena placed her hands on the edge of the tactical table. She thought of her father’s cruel laughter, her mother’s vicious arrogance, and her brother’s smug, treasonous face. They believed she was a failure, a stain on their illustrious military legacy. They had no idea that she was the absolute apex of that legacy, and that the storm about to hit their family was one she had personally engineered.
