Chapter 9 - Laura Kent
Jack did not fly to Montana unannounced.
Through investigator and counsel, Laura Kent was contacted.
She agreed to secure video interview.
At sixty, she had retired from medicine.
She looked at Jack for several seconds.
“You’re actually him.”
“I've always been him.”
Laura smiled sadly.
“That's exactly the problem.”
She had known Jack only through reports.
On November 5, 2007, she examined Michael Arden after minor training injury.
His badge said Sullivan.
But medical profile on terminal displayed Jack Sullivan’s blood type, age and prior injury history.
Michael did not match.
Laura confronted Hale.
Hale admitted credential was temporary.
She demanded correction.
He promised after demonstration.
She threatened halt.
Then Mercer arrived.
Laura believed Mercer would support her.
He did.
He ordered demonstration paused.
That contradicted Hale’s account.
At 16:30 Mercer left control area to call program legal counsel.
During absence, supervisor override entered.
Laura saw Victor Hale at terminal.
“Did you see him type code?”
“Yes.”
“Clearly?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know you saw?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He told me system had to finish one final sequence.”
“Why?”
“Because Arden Tactical executives were watching remotely.”
Hale had financial incentive?
Not personal kickback, Laura said.
He had staked career on procurement program and feared cancellation.
No evidence he owned company.
His motive was institutional ambition, not secret fortune.
Laura ordered evacuation herself.
Six instructors began clearing facility.
Then fire spread faster than expected.
Michael became disoriented.
Carlos Vega saw Sullivan badge and believed Michael was Jack.
The six helped push him toward service exit.
Some could have escaped? We should avoid implying all died solely saving him if uncertain. Laura says evacuation routes compromised; helping Michael cost time but fire/failed systems primary.
Laura escaped through medical corridor.
Six instructors were trapped when automatic fire doors malfunctioned.
Michael survived.
Hale survived.
Mercer survived because outside calling counsel.
Laura survived.
Why official file say she departed earlier?
Hale’s office altered departure timestamp, apparently to remove eyewitness from event chain.
Why didn't Laura speak publicly?
She did.
She gave statement to internal counsel.
Then received notice investigation moved under protected procurement review.
She was instructed not discuss pending matter.
Months passed.
She hired attorney.
Eventually signed settlement with no admission and left program.
“Why not contact families?”
“I was told they had complete findings.”
“They didn't.”
“I learned that years later.”
“Why didn't you find me?”
Laura’s eyes lowered.
“I thought you were Michael.”
Jack frowned.
“The composite file fooled you too?”
“Yes.”
She believed Jack Sullivan was alias assigned Michael.
Only Luke Brooks later told her there was real Jack Sullivan.
Luke intended connect them.
He died before doing so.
Evan became quiet.
Jack asked final question.
“Why did Hale create dead Sullivan instead of simply admitting Michael survived?”
Laura answered:
“Because Michael was the procurement demonstration.”
If Michael appeared as surviving vendor civilian, investigators would ask why he was inside restricted instructor lane, why badge carried Sullivan, why team treated him as military instructor.
Making “Sullivan” casualty obscured substitution.
Michael then accepted settlement and disappeared from program.
“Did Michael agree to fake death?”
“Not initially.”
“Later?”
“Yes.”
Michael had signed affidavit accepting confidentiality and acknowledging records would be “administratively reconciled.”
He claimed he didn't know that meant Jack’s identity would be marked dead.
Laura believed partly.
“He knew enough to know somebody else would carry cost.”
That fit.
Then she added:
“But Hale didn't invent Team Eight.”
Jack leaned forward.
“What was Team Eight?”
Laura stared at him.
“Not a second instructor team.”
“What was it?”
“A test designation.”
“Test of what?”
Laura looked toward camera.
“The thing you refused to approve.”
Jack’s faded insignia was not real secret.
It had simply led them to program.
The deeper issue was what Team Eight meant.
Laura said:
“And if you want to know why Hale needed your name so badly, find Test Eight’s original score sheet.”
