Chapter 4 - The Man Who Borrowed Jack’s Name
The stranger was alive after 2007.
Luke Brooks had proved it.
A photograph dated February 2008 showed same man entering private training conference in Virginia.
Different hair.
No insignia visible.
Same scar under left ear.
He was registered as:
Michael Arden.
Corporate security consultant.
Jack searched memory.
No recognition.
Ryan knew company.
Arden Tactical Systems had supplied protective equipment and simulation technology to Red Valley.
Michael Arden was founder’s nephew.
Civilian.
Why would civilian be placed into military instructor photograph under Jack Sullivan’s name?
Evan had more of Luke’s archive.
Luke started investigating in 2018 after encountering discrepancies while digitizing old training records.
He discovered casualty list naming Jack.
Then found Jack’s public civilian instructor certification renewal in 2010.
Impossible if same Jack died 2007.
Luke concluded casualty identity had been deliberately corrupted.
He contacted Thomas Mercer.
Mercer refused interview.
Two weeks later Luke’s access to Red Valley archive was revoked.
Not mysterious hacking.
His supervisor formally reassigned him because project exceeded scope.
Luke kept personal notes anyway.
Jack disliked that.
“He shouldn't have copied restricted material.”
Evan bristled.
“He was trying to expose truth.”
“That doesn't automatically make every method right.”
Evan quieted.
Jack had spent fifteen years teaching Marines one principle before technique:
Control mattered more than force.
Same applied to truth.
A good motive did not erase reckless conduct.
They contacted Michael Arden through attorney.
No response.
Corporate records showed he lived in Florida.
Then Ryan noticed another detail.
Michael Arden had competed in amateur kickboxing during 1990s.
Coach:
Thomas Mercer.
That linked them before Red Valley.
Jack said:
“Mercer put his own former athlete into program.”
“Why use your identity?” Evan asked.
“Access.”
Red Valley instructor credentials were limited.
Jack’s emergency evacuation created vacancy.
If Mercer wanted Arden inside for one day, easiest path might be to reuse active credential rather than authorize civilian.
But why?
Ryan remembered experimental demonstration scheduled November 5.
Arden Tactical wanted military procurement contract.
They needed elite instructors to test new protective gear and sensor systems.
Jack had objected.
Not because equipment dangerous, but because training instructors were being pressured to generate favorable performance results before proper evaluation.
Jack wrote memo.
He remembered now.
He had told Mercer:
“If they want procurement data, run procurement test. Don't dress marketing demo as combat validation.”
The next day Jack was injured in unrelated vehicle exercise and evacuated.
Then Michael Arden replaced him.
Using Jack’s identity.
If demonstration produced favorable results under “Sullivan,” credibility would appear to come from respected military instructor rather than vendor-connected civilian.
That was fraud.
But still didn't explain fire.
Luke’s notes said Michael survived.
Who were six casualties?
Jack remembered names from Team Seven.
But if fire happened Team Eight, maybe casualties were different people.
He had been told six colleagues died.
Had they?
Evan searched public records.
One supposedly dead instructor, Carlos Vega, had legitimate memorial.
Another, Henry Bell, too.
Four more confirmed.
All six truly died November 6.
So Jack’s original colleagues had remained or returned for Team Eight.
Only Jack evacuated.
Michael replaced him.
Fire killed six original members.
Michael survived.
Yet final report listed seven dead by treating Michael-as-Jack as seventh casualty.
Why mark substitute dead if he lived?
To erase unauthorized presence.
Jack’s face tightened.
Mercer did not falsify Jack’s death to hide Jack.
He falsified “Sullivan’s” death to hide Michael Arden.
The dead identity closed question of unauthorized substitute.
Ryan whispered:
“That’s why they told us you died.”
Jack nodded.
“They weren't burying me.”
“They were burying him.”
Then Evan opened final page from Luke’s file.
Michael Arden had been paid $240,000 six weeks after Red Valley.
Payment description:
CONSULTING SETTLEMENT — INCIDENT NONDISCLOSURE.
Sender was not military.
Not Mercer.
Arden Tactical Systems.
Signed by company CFO.
Jack stared at amount.
“If Michael was being paid to stay quiet, he knew what caused fire.”
Evan looked at him.
“Then find him.”
Jack nodded.
But before they could, Ryan’s gym receptionist walked in holding package delivered by courier.
No return address.
Inside:
Jack’s old Red Valley instructor badge.
The one Jack believed destroyed nineteen years earlier.
