Chapter 3 - The Mark Without a Name

The insignia was not an official unit emblem.
That was the first important truth.
It did not identify a secret assassination squad.
It did not grant authority.
It was not proof Jack belonged to some legendary military organization.
The mark was far more ordinary.
And therefore harder to explain.
In 2006, instructors assigned to an experimental close-combat curriculum began using a small unofficial symbol on training notebooks and gear cases.
A narrow shield.
Two diagonal bars.
A broken circle.
One instructor eventually had it tattooed.
Then another.
Jack was one of four.
“It was stupid,” Jack told Evan. “Something instructors did after a long course.”
“Then how did my brother recognize it?”
“I don't know.”
Ryan said symbol appeared in Red Valley investigation materials after closure.
Jack stared at him.
“Investigation?”
“Internal review.”
“I was never interviewed.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“You were listed dead.”
That explained why nobody contacted him through program.
But not why his ordinary military records remained correct.
Someone had not erased Jack Sullivan from government.
They had isolated one closed program file and marked him dead inside it.
Purpose?
Jack called former colleague Daniel Price.
Daniel had served with him before Red Valley but never at facility.
When Jack mentioned RV-8, Daniel became quiet.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Ryan Cole.”
“Stay away from it.”
“Why?”
“Because people lost careers over that file.”
“People died.”
“No,” Daniel said. “That's what you were told.”
Jack stood slowly.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel hung up.
Ten minutes later he texted an address.
Storage facility outside Baltimore.
Unit 214.
Combination:
Jack drove there next morning with an attorney and arranged lawful access after Daniel provided authorization.
Inside were three boxes.
Training manuals.
Photographs.
Old correspondence.
One envelope:
JACK — IF RED VALLEY EVER FINDS YOU AGAIN.
Jack opened it.
Daniel’s handwriting:
You survived because Mercer moved your name before the review began.
That sentence made no sense.
Then another:
He did not move you to protect you.
He moved you to protect whoever replaced you.
Inside was personnel matrix.
Team Seven:
Six instructor names.
Jack Sullivan among them.
Team Eight:
Seven names.
One redacted.
Jack compared dates.
Team Seven ended November 4, 2007.
Team Eight began November 5.
The fire occurred November 6.
Jack remembered being injured on November 4 during vehicle rollover exercise—not fire.
He was evacuated before shutdown.
That was why he survived.
Yet later internal report apparently merged Team Seven and Team Eight.
Someone placed his name among casualties from event he never witnessed.
Why?
A note from Daniel:
ASK WHO SIGNED THE NOVEMBER 5 TRANSFER.
Signature:
T. MERCER.
Thomas Mercer.
But beneath it was second approval.
Initials:
R.C.
Ryan Cole.
Jack stared.
Ryan had claimed he was merely civilian contractor who left three days before accident.
His initials appeared approving transfer after he supposedly left.
Jack returned to gym.
Ryan looked at document and went pale.
“I didn't sign this.”
“Those are your initials.”
“They're copied.”
“From what?”
Ryan sat down.
“Every contractor signed blank equipment verification sheets before rotation.”
Jack’s eyes hardened.
“You signed blank forms?”
“We were told logistics would fill serial numbers later.”
“That was reckless.”
“I know.”
“Who collected them?”
Ryan answered:
“Mercer.”
Evan, listening nearby, looked between them.
“So Mercer could put Ryan’s initials on anything?”
“Potentially.”
Jack studied document.
Then noticed typed line beneath transfer:
SULLIVAN SUBSTITUTE AUTHORIZED.
Not “Sullivan transferred.”
Substitute.
Someone replaced Jack after evacuation.
That explained stranger in photograph.
But not why stranger was given Jack’s name.
Then Evan received email from account belonging to late brother Luke.
Scheduled years earlier through dead-man archive.
Subject:
IF YOU FOUND SULLIVAN.
Attachment showed close-up of stranger.
On back Luke had written:
HE WAS NOT JACK SULLIVAN.
May you like
HE WAS NOT MILITARY.
AND HE DID NOT DIE AT RED VALLEY.
