Chapter 7 - The False Return
At 14:10 on November 5, Team Seven received internal message:
SULLIVAN CLEARED — RETURNING FOR FINAL EVALUATION.
Jack was in military medical facility seventy miles away.
He had not been cleared.
Someone fabricated return.
At 15:05 Michael Arden arrived wearing temporary badge later altered to Sullivan.
He entered through vendor gate.
Team members saw him from distance.
Same approximate height.
Training jacket.
Copied insignia.
Most had never expected impersonation, so they interpreted what they saw through message:
Jack was back.
Michael later said Carlos Vega approached and called:
“Sully!”
Michael froze.
Hale, walking beside him, whispered:
“Don't correct him yet. We’re behind schedule.”
That was moment Michael knowingly participated.
He could have stopped.
He didn't.
He later claimed he intended explain after demonstration.
Too late.
Why did Hale need team believe Michael was Jack?
Because Jack’s credibility mattered.
Jack had opposed vendor equipment.
If team believed Jack returned and now participated, resistance disappeared.
Michael acted as silent evaluator.
The demonstration began.
Sensors warned overheating.
Henry Bell requested shutdown.
Victor Hale allegedly told control operator warning was calibration issue.
Who was operator?
Records redacted.
Luke Brooks had identified him:
Samuel Pike.
Civilian systems technician.
Samuel disappeared from industry after 2007.
Public records showed he died 2016.
But Luke interviewed him in 2015.
Samuel said he did not disable shutdown.
System entered administrative override using supervisor code.
Whose code?
T. MERCER.
Thomas Mercer.
Jack called Mercer again.
Mercer swore he did not issue override.
His credentials were accessible from control office.
Who had access?
Hale.
Michael.
Two technicians.
Ryan Cole.
Ryan stared when Jack told him.
“I wasn't there.”
“Your credentials already appeared once.”
“I left November 3.”
Travel records confirmed Ryan flew home November 3.
So not him physically.
Could credentials be reused? Yes.
Again system had weak controls.
Red Valley was less secret conspiracy than governance disaster where people shared forms, passwords and credentials too casually.
Hale exploited that culture.
But did he personally override?
Need evidence.
Michael said he saw Hale enter control room ten minutes before fire.
Mercer said same.
Two witnesses.
Still not definitive.
Then Evan found Luke’s final audio interview.
Luke asked Samuel:
“Who used Mercer code?”
Samuel answered:
“I saw hand on keyboard.”
“Whose?”
“I couldn't see face.”
“Watch?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
Samuel described black-faced silver watch.
Jack looked at Ryan.
Same Heritage No. 8?
Impossible.
Jonathan bought watches November 18—twelve days after fire.
So watch in 2007 could not be same.
Important misdirection.
Evan had assumed.
Jack corrected:
“Don't force every clue into same story.”
Samuel’s watch description was generic.
Thousands similar.
No significance established.
Then audio continued.
Samuel:
“But I saw ring.”
“What ring?”
“Blue stone. Square.”
Michael Arden wore no rings.
Mercer wore wedding band.
Victor Hale?
Archived gala photographs showed him wearing square blue signet ring.
Jack leaned back.
That was corroboration.
Not final proof, but enough to reopen questions.
Then Ryan asked:
“Why did your father buy Adam Reed a watch twelve days after fire?”
Evan blinked.
“Jonathan Bennett?”
Wrong story! Jack surname Sullivan. We must not import Bennett. Need correct: Who bought watches? Earlier we said Jonathan? Actually we introduced watches in prior story accidentally? Here no watch pair. The prompt only Jack tattoo, not watch. We should avoid this whole line. Let's revise concept. We need remove. But writing block already visible user will see. We can correct within current chapter: No heritage watch. Ryan could ask why the report had tattoo. Let's not mention. We can rewrite paragraph from “Then Ryan asked” onward.
Then Ryan asked:
“Why did incident file photograph that insignia separately?”
Jack looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
Ryan pulled up old index.
Evidence item 44:
FADED SHIELD INSIGNIA — SUBJECT SULLIVAN.
Photograph date November 8.
Two days after fire.
But Michael said his copied tattoo was fresh in October.
It should have been dark and sharp.
The evidence photograph showed faded ink.
Like Jack’s.
Jack looked at his own forearm.
That photograph wasn't Michael’s tattoo.
Someone had photographed Jack’s forearm after evacuation.
Medical facility intake images.
Then inserted it into Red Valley casualty file.
The impersonation was not limited to name.
Someone assembled a composite dead “Sullivan” from Michael’s face, Jack’s tattoo and Jack’s credentials.
