Chapter 9 - Evelyn Price

The Maine address in Victor’s envelope led to a small coastal house.
Vanessa chose to go.
Arthur accompanied her with attorney and counselor.
Claire remained with Lily.
Evelyn Price opened the door herself.
Alive.
Sixty years old.
Older than Vanessa remembered.
Still unmistakable.
Their reunion did not erase eighteen years.
Vanessa cried.
Evelyn cried.
Then Vanessa asked:
“Why didn't you come back?”
Evelyn could explain the first years.
Raymond’s associates searched.
Witness relocation changed addresses repeatedly.
Vanessa stayed with protected aunt.
Contact risked exposing both.
Then Raymond went to prison.
Danger faded.
That was where explanation became harder.
Fear had become habit.
Then shame.
“I thought you hated me.”
“So you never asked?”
Evelyn lowered her head.
“No.”
Arthur had encouraged her repeatedly to contact Vanessa after immediate threat ended.
Evelyn refused.
Arthur respected decision because she remained protected witness.
Vanessa turned on him.
“You could have told me.”
“I could have broken her confidence.”
“Yes.”
“I chose not to.”
“Was that worth eighteen years?”
Arthur could not answer.
Evelyn explained Lily’s bills.
She discovered Daniel’s financial behavior through compliance alerts.
She knew Victor’s history.
She knew Daniel had approached Vanessa for information.
When she realized Daniel was using Lily’s medical money, she began covering shortfalls anonymously and sent evidence to Arthur.
“Why help Lily?”
Evelyn’s answer was simple.
“She was innocent.”
Then Vanessa asked the hardest question.
“Did Gray make you disappear?”
“No.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“No.”
“Did he take your money?”
“No.”
“What did he do?”
“He got me out.”
Room 1807 had been temporary extraction point.
Arthur, under alias Adrian Gray, booked room using controlled investigative funds.
Mara Holt escorted Evelyn into protected relocation.
Arthur did not create her new identity.
He helped finance and document legal move.
Then Evelyn revealed something Arthur had still not explained.
“Gray wasn’t sent to investigate me.”
Claire heard later over speaker.
“Then why was he there?”
Evelyn looked directly at Arthur.
“Because I found him first.”
Evelyn had approached Arthur after discovering Meridian money passing through properties connected to Bennett Hospitality.
She expected him to be part of fraud.
Instead, Arthur reported own company’s exposure and agreed cooperate.
Evelyn recruited the man Vanessa later feared.
That changed the story again.
May you like
But not entirely.
Because Arthur had made one decision in 2008 even Evelyn still regretted.
