Chapter 1 - The Man Downstairs

Lily had left the hospital because she thought her father had forgotten her.
Again.
At eleven, she already understood what unpaid medical bills looked like. She understood the expression on Claire’s face whenever another envelope arrived. She understood why her mother took work calls beside the hospital bed and whispered, “I’ll figure it out.”
What Lily did not understand was why Daniel never came.
A nurse followed her through the doors of the Grand Bellmont Hotel, trying to persuade her to return to the hospital car.
Then Lily stopped.
Across the glittering banquet hall, beneath crystal chandeliers, Daniel Carter was kissing a glamorous blonde woman in a red evening dress.
“Dad…?”
Daniel jerked away from Vanessa.
For one second embarrassment crossed his face.
Then he saw wealthy guests watching.
Embarrassment became anger.
He strode across the room.
“What are you doing here?”
“I wanted you.”
Lily’s oxygen mask trembled in her hand.
Daniel knocked her hand aside. The mask slid across the carpet. His hand struck her cheek sharply, and Lily fell onto the edge of the dance floor.
Several guests gasped.
Daniel grabbed the back of her hair.
“You and your mother are nothing but burdens.”
Lily struggled desperately for breath.
Then the banquet doors burst open.
Claire.
The nurse had called her the instant Lily wandered away.
Claire saw her daughter on the floor.
She moved without hesitation.
Her kick sent Daniel stumbling backward into the champagne tower. Glasses cascaded around him as Claire dropped beside Lily and pressed the oxygen mask securely over her nose and mouth.
Lily clung to her.
“He was kissing her…”
Claire looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Something inside her seemed to go cold.
She lifted Lily protectively into her arms and pulled out her phone.
“Father… your son-in-law betrayed us.”
Daniel’s anger vanished.
His face turned white.
Claire switched to speaker.
A deep older voice answered.
“Keep Lily safe. I’m already downstairs.”
Daniel took an involuntary step backward.
But Vanessa reacted even more violently.
Her champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered.
“No…”
Claire turned toward her.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
“Not him.”
DING.
The banquet elevator opened.
A tall older man stood inside.
Daniel backed away.
Vanessa grabbed Claire’s sleeve.
“Claire… you don’t know who your father really is.”
The man stepped into the light.
Arthur Bennett.
Claire’s father.
Vanessa whispered another name.
May you like
“Adrian Gray.”
And for the first time in Claire’s life, she saw fear in her father’s eyes—not because someone had discovered him, but because he realized a secret he had buried for eighteen years had just walked back into his daughter’s life.
