Chapter 8 - What Daniel Took From Lily

The audit went deeper.
Daniel had diverted $214,000 over fourteen months.
$127,600 had already been replaced.
$86,400 remained outstanding when Arthur discovered it.
He had not drained a giant inheritance.
He had manipulated reimbursement timing inside Lily’s medical subaccount to cover losses from private development deal.
Daniel believed he could put money back before quarterly audit.
He failed.
Claire had spent those same months exhausting herself to keep Lily’s care uninterrupted.
“Why didn't you tell me we were losing money?” she asked.
Daniel stared at floor.
“Because you would have known my project was failing.”
“So you let me think Lily’s treatment was the problem.”
Silence.
He protected pride by making his wife carry fear.
Vanessa’s dormant company became convenient mask.
She had not received medical money.
But Daniel’s use of her company showed affair and financial deception overlapped.
Then Vanessa produced text:
DANIEL:
When Gray comes back, we leave.
Claire looked at him.
“You told her I knew about affair?”
Daniel admitted he had.
Vanessa had believed Claire accepted dead marriage.
Another lie.
Not excuse.
Arthur’s audit found one transaction he did not recognize.
$37,000 from Elise Warren’s account to Grand Bellmont.
Memo:
1807 — HOLD UNTIL VANESSA ARRIVES.
Evelyn had recently paid to keep Room 1807’s old private deposit box under preservation agreement.
Someone wanted Vanessa to open it.
Hotel attorney supervised.
Inside was red envelope.
VANESSA.
Handwriting was not Evelyn’s.
Arthur recognized it.
Victor Carter.
Daniel’s father had written it before death.
Vanessa opened letter.
Victor admitted he had warned Raymond Price that Evelyn was cooperating.
“I believed I was protecting Meridian and my family.”
He knew it placed Vanessa in danger.
He regretted.
And he wrote something else.
“Adrian Gray tried to stop me.”
Vanessa stared at Arthur.
For years Raymond told her opposite.
Gray had not betrayed Evelyn.
Victor had.
Then final paragraph:
“If my son ever becomes involved with Vanessa Price, tell her truth before he repeats my cowardice.”
Daniel had read a copy of this letter after Victor’s death.
He knew Arthur tried to save Evelyn.
Yet he allowed Vanessa to believe Gray destroyed her family.
Because that belief made Vanessa easier to manipulate.
For the first time, Vanessa looked at Daniel without affection.
“You knew.”
Daniel whispered:
“Yes.”
“You knew who Gray was to my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me hate Claire because of him.”
“I needed you to trust me.”
“You needed my key.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“At first.”

Vanessa stepped away.
Whatever feelings later became real had grown from a deliberate lie.
