Chapter 3 - The Photograph From Halcyon

Claire took Lily back to the hospital.

She refused to return home with Daniel.

Doctors confirmed Lily was stable, but Claire remained beside her until she slept.

Only then did she confront Arthur.

“Who is Adrian Gray?”

Arthur stood near the hospital window.

“A name I used a long time ago.”

“For what?”

“I can’t explain all of it yet.”

“Vanessa thinks you caused her mother to disappear.”

“I did not.”

“That isn’t the same as telling me what happened.”

Arthur looked tired.

“Evelyn Price was in danger.”

Vanessa’s mother.

Claire knew little about her.

Vanessa filled in the gaps.

Evelyn had been an accountant for her husband Raymond Price, an investment manager later convicted of fraud. When Evelyn discovered forged charitable transactions, she cooperated with investigators.

After threats began, she and twelve-year-old Vanessa moved temporarily into Halcyon House.

Halcyon was presented publicly as a residential support program for women rebuilding their lives after financial abuse, domestic violence, or medical debt.

Vanessa sent Claire a photograph.

A younger Evelyn stood outside a large country house.

Beside her was twelve-year-old Vanessa.

Behind them—

Arthur.

The caption read:

MR. ADRIAN GRAY — HALCYON HOUSE — 2007.

Claire stared at the image.

Same father.

Different name.

Vanessa sent another photograph.

Arthur stood beside Evelyn and a third man.

Victor Carter.

Daniel’s father.

Victor had died five years earlier from a heart attack.

Nothing mysterious about his death.

But Claire knew he had once controlled Carter Medical Properties, a company that bought struggling clinics and rehabilitation centers.

On the back of the photograph someone had written:

IF VICTOR LEARNS WHO GRAY REALLY IS, EVELYN AND VANESSA ARE FINISHED.

Claire called Arthur.

“What did Victor have to do with Evelyn?”

“Too much.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“Not then.”

“And now?”

Arthur hesitated.

That was answer enough.

Daniel had found something.

Claire confronted him through attorney.

Daniel admitted finding a sealed file among Victor’s papers two years earlier.

The file was labeled:

ADRIAN GRAY.

He claimed it contained fragments, not explanations.

One name appeared repeatedly.

EVELYN PRICE.

Another:

MERIDIAN MEDICAL RELIEF.

Daniel insisted that was all he knew when he first met Vanessa.

Vanessa disagreed.

“He kept asking me about my mother’s old papers.”

Claire felt the affair becoming something worse.

Daniel had not simply met Vanessa and fallen into betrayal.

He may have been searching her.

Then Vanessa sent Claire one preserved message.

DANIEL:

If Evelyn kept anything from Halcyon, it could protect both of us.

Protect Daniel from what?

He refused to answer.

Arthur eventually did.

“From his father.”

Victor Carter had left more than property behind.

He had left financial exposure.

And somewhere inside Halcyon House was evidence Daniel believed could decide whether Victor had merely been careless—

or criminal.
