Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Revenge
Vanessa finally admitted why she had approached Daniel.
It had not begun purely because Daniel approached her first.
After he contacted her at a charity event, Vanessa searched him.
She discovered he had married Arthur Bennett’s daughter.
The daughter of “Adrian Gray.”
Raymond’s prison letters had taught Vanessa one story:
Gray destroyed Evelyn.
Gray stole evidence.
Gray abandoned them.
Vanessa wanted answers.
Daniel seemed route into Arthur’s family.
At first she encouraged his attention partly for revenge.
Then attraction became real.
That made her choices worse, not better.
She knew Claire existed.
She continued.
“I wanted to hurt someone connected to him,” Vanessa told Claire.
“And Lily?”
“No.”
“But you still helped create what she walked into.”
Vanessa lowered eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire did not forgive her.
She did not need to.
But Vanessa gave investigators every message Daniel sent.
One was particularly damaging.
DANIEL:
I know Gray didn’t kill her. Victor said he moved her. But Vanessa only talks when she’s angry. Let her keep believing what Raymond told her.
Daniel had known Arthur likely saved Evelyn.
He knowingly fed Vanessa’s hatred.
Another:
If I get the Halcyon ledger, Victor’s estate exposure disappears and Bennett can’t control me anymore.
That revealed his real initial motive.
Daniel believed ledger might reduce Carter liability and give him leverage against Arthur.
He targeted Vanessa for key.
Affair later became emotionally real, but origin was calculated.
Claire confronted Daniel during monitored meeting.
“Did you ever love Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa asked:
“Did you ever love Claire?”
“Yes.”
Claire almost laughed.
Daniel’s definition of love had become meaningless because he repeatedly chose himself.
Then he confessed why Arthur’s voice terrified him at banquet.
Three days earlier Daniel received notice that Bennett Family Medical Trust had opened emergency audit.
He knew Arthur had found transfers.
He also knew Gray file was being unsealed.
The moment Arthur said “I’m already downstairs,” Daniel understood two worlds he had manipulated were about to collide.
Financial fraud.
Victor’s past.
Vanessa.
Claire.
Lily.
He could no longer keep them separated.
Vanessa’s reaction had entirely different cause.
She recognized Arthur’s deep voice from Halcyon.
At twelve, she had heard Adrian Gray reassure mother:
“I’ll get you out.”
Raymond later twisted that memory until Vanessa associated same voice with disappearance.
When elevator opened, she thought man she blamed for losing mother had returned.
